The Foreigner (2017)

Action & Adventure • R • Directed by: Martin Campbell • 113 minutes

The story of humble London businessman Quan (Chan), whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love - his teenage daughter - is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat- and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Brosnan), whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers.

Bomb Making Movie
★★★★★
So-so actors engage in phone conversations and board meetings punctuated by karate chops. Jackie Chan's face looks horrible. Movie shot in 10 days, quick paycheck for all involved. Movie makes little use of London location, just a few scene stetting helicopter flyovers and then a suburban street scene. — Mission Accomplished

Legends don’t die, they get better
★★★★★
Jackie Chan show that Haters hate so blindly they can’t see how awesome people are(except trump). I already had high expectations for this movie, but it just blew my mind even more than I was expecting. Blood pumping fights, a good old game of Tom and jerry, and pretty well homemade Bombs, all add up so greatly, this might as well be one of the best movies you’ll ever see. — puzuti

Loved it! Jackie may not be as fast as he once was, but he still has some moves. Great to see him in a dramatic role; and Pierce Brosnan was just as good. Keep on making films Jackie!! — AA550

Jackie Chan has matured into greatness!!!
★★★★★
THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS MOVIE!! Jackie Chan can now be classified as a great actor, there was no comedy in this movie, and he did not spend 90% of the movie bouncing around showing off his skills. It was much more realistic, with real heart felt emotions and great acting, and judicious use of his consumate skills when necessary for the purpose of the plot/movie. I hope he keeps making great movies like this, and I think he should be nominated for some really excellent acting chops!! — aikidavid

Don't expect the typical Chan film
★★★★★
"Foreigner" was so much better than I expected! It is definitely NOT a typical Jackie Chan film - not silly, not minute-to-minute action, and not typical fight scenes - although the action is there; it completely serves the development of the story. It IS a drama - a well-told story of a father's tragic loss and how he deals with it. The plot has continuity and believability, and a few surprises, twists, and turns. Pierce Brosnan - IMO - develops the depth of his character very well - so much so that I didn't expect some of his moves. And his ending? A satisfying unknown that gives the viewer a chance to imagine a fitting fate. Jackie Chan in this film reminds me of Jet Li's role in "Unleashed" - intense, transformative, and a big divergence from their standard fare. Well done! — TRK02

Best Jackie Chan Movie Yet

This is my favorite Jackie Chan movie yet. He plays a serious role and does a fantastic job! Great cast, great story, great movie. Enjoy! — Mt. Wanahawkaloogy

Not at all what I expected
★★★★
This film is as much Brosnan's as Chan. I was not expecting him to be in the film as much as he was, or for the story to delve into his life as much as it did. Granted, I'm knocking off one star for the cliche plot points, and the "Irish soap opera" elements of the story. Outside of those issues, it's a fairly entertaining film that allows Chan to show off a side of him we just don't see too often. I liked it! — ManWayUpNorth

I wasn’t expecting much was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Jackie chan will break your heart, great acting. My only qualm is that I would have liked to see at least one woman be portrayed as something other than a manipulative shrew. Other than that quite enjoyable. — Gazi07

Tragic, smart and intense
★★★★
Simply the best acting either Brosnan or Chan have ever done. It’s a smart thriller that’s part political intrigue, part tragic revenge story and part morality struggle. There are some terrific action sequences that are brutal and intense as well as some horrific depictions of terrorist attacks, but it is not a straight action film. Anyone expecting Rumble in the Bronx will probably not “get” this film. It’s the story of a Chinese business owner who loses his daughter in a terrorist attack by a rogue I.R.A. faction. It’s a movie as much about his violent methods used when he hits a bureaucratic wall to learn who was behind the attack as much as it’s about an Irish politician manipulating both Irish and British intelligence agencies to keep the attacks from spiraling further out of control. Both men go to some surprisingly extreme measures to accomplish their goals. Highly recommended for mature thriller fans. — Fletch F. Fletch

Suprisingly Great Movie
★★★★★
I watched this movie simply thinking I would be entertained with lots of martail arts action, and honestly, there was enough, but what suprised me was the story along with great acting. Of course, it follows so many other "man with a dangerous past" stories that came before it, but I think Chan showed a more vulnerable side while avoiding the schticky humor that usually consumes his presence on screen. Well done! — Can Someone Write a Decent Song PLEASE!

Poor plot, silly film
★★★★
Remove Jackie Chan and this could be a 1980’s Saturday afternoon UHF z-level action movie. Chan does an impressive job acting but it’s just a silly movie. They don’t want you to see Chan’s character as anything but morally righteous so they will show him setting a bomb, blowing up a barn and the people inside surviving. Why? Because this is an awful movie. Pierce Brosnan does a great Gerry Adams impression. He and Chan can walk away with their heads held high. But the writing is just so lame that the movie is a waste of time. — SksmithChicago

Astounding!
★★★★★
I was real surprised at how great this movie turned out. I saw Chan’s interviews of him stating how he wanted to act in movies other than action ones since he’s been doing the same thing his entire career. It’s strange to see him try and play a drama role but, he did his parts real wells. His lines though are all extremely short so, don’t expect him to say much throughout this entire movie. It’s too bad that he had never learned English with all his fortune and fame. — Akuzaru

I would’ve preferred for Jackie Chan to be the director of this film. It is still a joy to watch this movie with the action that is brought to life by Jackie Chan. — Polarbear314%
