Oldman’s tour de force performance
★★★★★
A terrific movie that shares an incredible story of Winston Churchill and England gearing up for the greatest battle by the greatest generation. Oldman’s performance was remarkable. This is history told the way it should be. — stoph61

True Art- Oldman is amazing
★★★★★
Gary Oldman gave us one of the finest performances of a historical icon since Daniel Day Lewis played Abraham Lincoln. A real measure of this success is when an audience is totally immersed into the character and feel they really have become that character. The scenery, the wardrobe, the lighting- all excel to the finest detail. I expected more military action- my only disappointment- but surprisingly the intelligence and maturity of this motion picture was enough to transport us into a terrifying prospect of Hitler taking over the last stronghold of humanity in Europe. This is a really refreshing break from the silly endless super hero movies and make believe motion comic books that have little intellectual value. People may actually learn a few things (or seek out further exploration) into this strange icon of the man who may have saved us from Nazi domination. — Red Grange

Gary Oldman...
★★★★★
This is a very staged movie. I think that this movie and ‘DUNKIRK’ together make a unique historical world that creates a place for this movie besides watching Gary Oldman. I continued to forget that he was playing Winston Churchill. The very claustrophobic and red/yellow hue is an angst engine for this interesting and amazing performance. I have been an Oldman fan since I first saw him years ago. This is why the Academy Awards is still relevant. A movie that could be performed on a perfect stage with perfect design is very dependent upon the actors. This film becomes whole when history and ‘DUNKIRK’ meet Oldman’s Churchill. God save the Queen and Prime Minister Churchill!!! — majorthomas

Oldman did a wonderful job
★★★★★
A good snippet of time starting from Neville Chamberlain’s resignation up to the Dunkirk rescue, we get a sense of the pressure and stress felt by Churchill as the reality of Great Britain’s fall looms. Oldman captures The British Bulldog in all the quirkiness and toughness I always imagined. — knowfler

Great movie in many ways...
★★★★★
Easily best actor performance. Just an amazing once in a lifetime display of acting skills. A fascinating snippet of impactful history that affects us all still today. Nice touches on the visuals/directing. The script is excellent and adds a sense of suspense even though we know what’s going to happen. Also loved the music. — Jwcarlon

Didn’t come together
★★★★★
The cinematography of this movie is beautiful at times. Particularly the overhead shots and the visual framing of Winston Churchill within the dark. The portrayal of him was great. This movie was good in many ways but not all through. It’s history. And this movie lacks the embellishment that usually comes with this subject. Because of this; it dragged at some points and there was a moment of relief when it ended. I gave it two stars because I usually love stuff like this and I would never watch it again. There were good moments and it’s well made. But by the end of the movie there was this lack of cumulation. It fell half flat. I personally didn’t like it as a whole and would not recommend for purchase. Worth a rental if you like the history, though. (Apologies for any spelling+ grammar mishaps) — mirrorsontheceiling

Honestly I didn’t care for Gary Oldman’s performance here his portrayal of Churchill rang hollow to me. The look and feel of the movie also does it no favors director Joe Wright incorporates 2 or 3 tricks that he goes about repeating. Recomend you rent Darkest Hour with a further recommendation that you check out The Gathering Storm and Into The Storm they are both much stronger films in every way. — sculpting

Good Not Great
★★★★
- beautiful movie like The Crown though don’t agree with a few scenes when Churchill wimpers (didn't they read the book Churchill spent 10 years writing about his ancestor Marlborough: His Life and Times and all his other work) his real life soldering to know what he was like (check out Wikipedia) -- John Lithgow as Churchill (see The Crown) would have been better — nettalk

Oldman brings Churchill to life
★★★★★
This is more than a performance... it’s a channeling of the greatest man of the 20th century ... a possession of the spirit of Winston himself and an exquisite production that anyone with more than two brain cells can and should enjoy — ilovepoop1234

Noble effort - weak character development
★★★★★
Frankly, I did not find Gary Oldman's performance to be convincing. Albert Finney and Brendan Gleeson most definitely did a better job of Churchill in Gathering Storm / Into The Storm. Darkest Hour tends to overplay things in the negative, largely because the role of Churchill was not written in such a way to provide much substance. You don't really get into the man. What you see is behavior, not a person. As for cinematography, they keep using a gimmick of exterior light and interior haze. It is just as distracting as Abrams blasting lights into the lens in Star Trek. Once is enough. After a few times it is extremely distracting. As for watching the movie, I suggest it be seen and they followed by Gathering Storm and Into the Storm. — Furutan1
