Lady Bird

Comedy • R • Directed by: Greta Gerwig • 94 minutes

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

not for me.

Aimless movie about teenager and her relationship with her mother. Saoirse Ronans accent slipped into her Irish accent in the early part of the movie. I found for a 1.30 hour movie it seemed to be much longer, 30 minutes in I was unhappy to realise there was another hour of drivel left to watch. The scene where the mother talks to the Priest/drama teacher about his depression is by far the most realistic and well acted scene in the movie. Had the moive been about the mother and her daily life I think it would have been far more enjoyable. — Gercaro

Boring. Boring. Boring
★★★★
I love movies. I love great acting. I love great stories--plot, direction, etc. But this was a boring, pointless, amature-hour school production of crap. Seriously. And I live in Sacramento. One big boring bowl of crap. What a waste of energy on everyone's part. How in God's name could this piece of amature crap get nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Lead Actress, and Supporting Actress in 2018? Who knows? Are folks smoking too much marijuaua? High on drugs? Drunk? Or just stupid? Or slept with someone for a bribe? Geez. The script was pointless. Yes, I know it's a coming-of-age mother-daughter angst film--but who gives a rat's butt if the movie is bad? Pathetic. And I love movies. But this was a waste of money and time. And I live in Sacramento and couldn't take it. — legal-eagle-for-music

I believe that my negative reaction to attempting to make it through this film is probably due to my perspective. I wanted to see a movie that my wife would be more likely to enjoy instead of making her watch my motifs for movies. I am 56 years old and grew up with all boys in a different world. So the lack of relatable events were bound to be inclusive with this film. But more than even this; I couldn’t take the facade of a young but much older than high school aged actress was playing the main character from a movie that was obviously the personal retake on the writer/director’s experience. It would be fine if she just showed it to herself; but it was very depressing and clumsy with humor forced into a bunch of negative and shallow characters. I am happy that the director got away with creating a dreary tedious ‘slice of an uninteresting life’... But how can this movie receive the accolades it has is confounding to me. Obviously made for a different audience; but very poorly made and meaningless for myself and others who may believe in the undeserved hype. I hate being so negative; but be warned that unless you are seeking nothing special at all; or you don’t want to watch a movie that is about a girl going through constant stereotypes of angst... stay far away. Otherwise it was.... — majorthomas

Definitely not the best movie I’ve seen, but extremely real. I recommend a rent...not a buy. Wish the mother and daughter relationship was addressed more. Feel like I need to watch a second or third time to collect all the pieces I may have missed. Ending was meh for me. — JenKolb

I wish there was a movie of this caliber out every week on iTunes, regardless the subject matter. So well written and put together, this is a movie experience anyone can enjoy. Well written, a good story, and put together by a true film maker, not someone looking to use their indie film as a soapbox, but just to tell a heartfelt story (sometimes that's a fine line between the two). 5 stars. — 700 Pages

possibly the best film i have ever experienced. so raw and unfiltered and authentic, it almost hit too close to home. watching feels like experiencing so many emotions and nostalgia at once, no matter who the viewer is. — sonicgreen.co.vu

Saw This Opening Day
★★★★
Saw this movie, opening day, with an ex of mine. Both in agreement, this film is melodramatic, stale and predictable. This film had no creative energy. The acting was on par, at best. This film should have remained an idea on paper and never been taken to the big screen. Most boring film Ive seen, to date. Waste of money at the box office. — Harley-QuinnJordanBlack

Perhaps the best film of the year, Lady Bird follows a young woman and her mother and the relationship they build as she leaves for college. Sure to pick up some Oscars, this is a movie you do not want to miss. Great direction, acting and screenplay all play a part in what makes this movie beautiful. — jackell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lady Bird
★★★★★
I saw this movie in the theatre and fell in love with it. The colours are beautiful, the way the portray the relationship between the mother and daughter are very much the way some parents are. My mom, uncle and I saw it and we all talked after and my mother said how lady bird’s mother was being selfish because she didn’t want her daughter to be far away from her and explore the world, it hit home for me. Lady bird found herself and it was beautiful. The responses she gives are ones i would give to my mom. I’ve found my favourite movie this year. — Dancewiththemoonpoop

Beautifully Written, Acted, and Directed
★★★★★
Lady Bird is a beautiful movie about a girl from Sacramento (the Midwest of California) who is wanting more out of life, and to get out of Sacramento. Greta Gerwig wrote a truly exceptional script, and Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan were incredible in their mother/daughter relationship. This has quickly become one of my favorite movies. Thank you, Greta, for writing this about our hometown! — Alex Koziol

Lady Bird
★★★★★
This film is a very funny, but very honest movie about a girl living in California. The concept is simple, but through the exceptional writing and directing from Greta Gerwig, excellent perfomances from Saoirse Ronan and Lucas Hedges, this movie is a real delightful treat. It actually caught me a bit off guard at how it made me feel. It felt real, which is comendable to say the least. I can say I love this movie, and I will watch it again, because it's an experience that people should watch to understand what goes in within people's lives. Plus, if you wanna be a screenwriter, take note here, because the dialogue feels really real. This movie is not for everyone, that's a given, but you should at least give it a chance, I know I did. — Noah Pfister
