Viewer reviewsPlot never developed
I kept waiting for a plot to develop in this movie however it really did not. This movie was not good nor did I enjoy it. It was a mishmash of a few different stories that were put together. — |~OM~|
Honestly was really good at the beginning, but then all went down hill till the end. The ending was good, but honestly don’t waste your money — deepwvters
I would definitely recommend this film. It is phenomenal. — (SkyHopper)
I was excited to watch this but couldn't even finish it. It was so boring and confusing. Not sure how in the world it got such a buildup prior to release. One of the worse movies I have ever seen. — ed12334567
Honestly, greatest movie I've ever seen
It's tense, the music is amazing, and the cinematography is excellent. This is one of the best directed films ever. It's so technically sound. This is such a good movie and watch it with the volume up! — Mr. Awesome aka Sean
This movie just dragged on. It was the same scenes from different eyes over and over. Basically they could have just made this movie 20 minutes and been done with it. — CashMoney83
Best Movie There Is
No spoilers ahead. I finally saw Dunkirk and I absolutely love it! Christopher Nolan has out done himself. I thought the movie was a masterpiece and I’m regretting not going to see it in theaters when it was filmed in 35mm and 70mm. It got a 92% on rotten tomatoes and it’s well deserved. Ive also read the movie’s script which is phenomenal. Definitely suggest buying the movie and watching it as much as you can. The storyline is huge and I love how the story is told with minimal dialogue. Show don’t tell! Can’t believe Christopher Nolan originally didn’t want to use a script. — arclark2019
Not worth the time. — LondonBooks
There was no plot to this movie Just drag Now — Marty Balintfy
So many cliché pictures with not much of a story. Nothing to do with Dunkirk. This could have been called Amazon, or whatever. One kid was made a hero bc he fell in the stairs..... TOTAL NONSENSE MOVIE.... wait until it is for free and then watch but only if you have NOTHING to do bc it is a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME!! — Namenicka
Perhaps trying to watch on iPad was the problem. The music overwhelmingly loud and 50% of the dialogue could not be understood due to loud music. If you like War you will enjoy otherwise there isn’t much to see. Really no plot and bouncing from one improbable scene to another including toy aircraft being shot down by a fighter low on fuel!!!? — 8waxahachie
92% on rotten tomatoes? How!!!
I’m shocked that this movie received a 92% rotten tomato review. I am actually surprised that even 92 people liked this movie. No backstory on any character and almost no dialogue the whole movie. — Khanivore
The most boring and uninteresting film by Nolan
I didn’t like the movie one bit, the trailer got me excited so much, but the movie was a let down I was expecting a twist or something amazing, nothing happened. Don’t waste your time and money. — Roaf Htun
Wow...what a disappointment.
Take one of the most telling events in the World War....add: +HUGE budget, +high paid actors, +period correct Spitfires and etc and etc. and etc....and you could NOT make a worse movie. Save your money and time. The people who really need rescuing are the poor souls who paid to see this wholly disappointing movie. — ElDiabloDeLosAves
One for the History Channel
Dunkirk was a tour de force of a movie by the Film Noir Of Christopher Nolan! This should be an Oscar Contender! — 16 HORSES
My money is on this film at the Oscars!! — tikiroomfan
A mockery to those who fought and died there.
Ultimately, a teenage boy is a hero of Dunkirk? Who made this movie? Disney? Then a little girl would be the hero. Come to think of it... — 747whaledriver
Great movie — goofy2476
British History and artful emotion!!!!
This movie is visually stunning and artfully filmed but it doesn't loss out on emotion at all. I think a lot of Americans are being very racist for marking down this movie because they struggle with the accent. It's a foreign film for you! I find it a masterful achievment to maintain so much emotion and suspence for a movie that has so little character development or plot. The timelines are the key. If you were not paying attention to the fact that there are three timelines unfolding and magically colliding is cinamatic groundbreaking creativity. I understsnd why so many are calling it the best movie of all time. — Shell S
Best movie of 2017 without a doubt. Visual storytelling, and absolutely astonishing cinematography. An experience you shouldn't miss, and one you won't forget either. — Jcjcmd
Overhyped for sure. Story was choppy at best, the characters were flat. Practical effects were not epic. And the CGI effects - what happened? It's no Saving Private Ryan and it's not even close to Fury. — CletusBrawleysGhost
Terrible score - soundtrack
absolutely bogus soundtrack, fake angst building sounds building up tension that isn't even there with total ransid sounds of discourse. It's sound meant to vibrate you into insanity and shudder your cells apart. Meanwhile this movie is 40 minutes in and slow slow slow starting. But I doubt I'm going to be able to hang long enough to get drawn into the story. I want to pull my ears out to stop this ultra low chop garbage. — Ouijibored
The dogfighting scenes in this film are fantastic. Very well shot ! — D O'C
This movie is so extremely boring. It was hard to stay awake the first time I saw it. I don't think I'll ever see this movie again. I'm just really surprised how much praise Dunkirk is getting. I guess people think boring movies are exciting, which... makes perfect sense... — Drummerthe1st
Very very boring — Stu Dubb
great story but I would have liked more....
This is an amazing story....and yet I found that there was little lead in or personalization of any characters.....I also didn't like the music throughout. I thought it was good, but wanted to be pulled into the story more. And would have liked more of the background an history at the start or even through out. Scenes are very realistic and powerful on the beaches and in the boats and air. — Victoria9999
Such a good representation of the event and great storyline! — Jazmine1994
I don’t get it. I don’t understand how this film got such attention. Those people must have been high. Better yet, maybe they too think making a good film is all about showing how to do fancy scenes to showcase what little you learned in film school. This could’ve been a great story. All over the place and made utterly no sense. When I finally came out of my coma, about an hour and fifteen minutes later(time I’ll never get back), I turned it off. As much as Mel Gibson has tarnished his reputation, he absolutely deserves credit in the area of great film direction and production. Maybe they should refer to a movie like “Braveheart” or “Hacksaw Ridge” to see how it should be done. — Kellyb166839
Not Nolan’s Best but still a decent film. — Duff15
Don’t waste your money!
Horrible movie, watching paint dry is more entertaining. — Mr.sweets
Nolan the genius
I love how Nolan uses the same actors in every movie and also uses Hans Zimmer for his music. He’s a true genius, I love this movie. — capsovi8
I don't see why this movie is rated this high, I found it totally disappointing. — Twice Blessed Man
Jumped back and forth in story line...Made it hard to follow...At end it came together but I lost interest before it all tied together... — Death.......
The problem I see is that if you are not a student of history, you will not get this. It is very rich in history, but you have to understand the subject and the time. I hope that people will invest the effort. It is worth it. — Hyperion Vars
More like Dumbkirk
All the good reviews are either paid, work for the company or they are Brit's This movie is total snooze fest and if brits think this played a huge part in Winning WWII that is just sad! One word Normandy!! — Pipedragon
No character development, ridiculousnplot holes that make no sense. I think Christopher Nolan May have been high! — MBC Superman
its was just okay no big climax
I was expecting much more action and blood shed as there truly was on Dunkirk this did not really show what truly happened there but more of a hollywood account of how it may hvae felt. Not a true war movie and had no climax. I could have done with out seeing this. — hunter38574
Great film, here’s why....
Writing this to brighten the review for this film. First I have recognized the majority of reviews of this film criticize how boring the film was due to its lack of depth I.e. character development (there are others but just as an example). Let’s revisit the very basic description of the film before getting into the story depth argument. The title of the film is Dunkirk which highlights the operation of how more than half a million men during the Second World War were rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk, France. Stranded on the beaches by the advancing German blitzkrieg war machine, Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer do a wonderful job building the tension without using much dialogue. It draws a picture with each scene without the use of dialogue. Simply, using scenes and Zimmer’s soundtrack to tell the story than dialogue. Before the films release, Nolan was interviewed where he suggested he wanted the entire film to be made without any dialogue. It shows his dedication to his art form he was looking to achieve. Tell a story by describing the events with scenes. If your interested to see this film, it’s best to keep an open mind and limit expectations. This is not a Michael Bay romance character conflict package such as Pearl Harbor. Bay’s film highlights character development over the course of the pacific war and not focusing on the events within the Pearl Harbor disaster where Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk highlighted those events perfectly told through a series of scenes and music. Dunkirk is a film about the rescue of an army told through the delicate balance of reduced dialogue and Han Zimmer’s soundtrack. If your into this type of storytelling, I recommend you see this film. — jsunnReviews
Difficult to follow...entertaining nevertheless.
The show jumps around to different perspectives and different time zones, a little difficult to follow but I don’t really have anything bad to say about it. — Jackel_Edwards
dont usally like history movies and I get bored ery easily but LOVED this movie — Oliviaroseco
Thought the story line was lacking belief and it was way to sanitized . Defiantly not any where close to the hype it was given. — RMINNICKS
Beautiful film about perseverance in the face of overwhelming adversity. Zimmer is the best, hands down! Only Nolan could take a catastrophic defeat and turn it into a radiant message of hope. 5/5 Best war movie since Saving Private Ryan. — Omnithomas
Not even a movie
Like many others, I'm disturbed by the spectacular reviews this dismal piece of work has been receiving. I rarely write reviews of movies, but I'm concerned about what this may mean for the future of movies, so I thought I'd weigh in. Dunkirk lacks several essential characteristics required by common sense to even earn the classification of the term "movie". First, it lacks any semblance of a plot. The director assumes that we know the actual history, but this doesn't absolve him of the responsibility of providing one, which he has not. A character states the main issue early in the "movie", and a screen of words provide us an unsatisfying conclusion at the end. That's it. There's actually nothing else! Second, it lacks actual characters. Everyone agrees on this point, so you don't need to hear it again from me. Third, it lacks any semblance of dialog. What little there is is simply irrelevant or too muddled to understand. Were it not for its other problems, Dunkirk might effectively be a silent movie. But it'd still actually be much less than a silent movie because what passes for its background "music" is a few spare notes from a few instruments, repeated over and over and over, ad nauseum. Coincidentally, after I wrote this review, I discovered that someone actually made an eight-minute silent movie out of Dunkirk! It was much better than the extended version the rest of us suffered through. Indeed, it proved that there were no more than eight minutes worth of "movie" in it. I think that critics have fallen for this "movie" in part due to the director's previous work and in part to prove their "brilliance"--that they can "appreciate" a piece of tedious tripe the rest of us do not. We see this all too often (think: modern art), and it's a shame. Let's face it, director Nolan phoned this one in and, for whatever reason, reviewers bought into it. In short, Dunkirk is just plain awful--a scam that shouldn't have made it past the cutting room floor--a sad and inappropriate tribute to those who risked or lost their lives in the actual event. — BD35
This could/should have been an awesome movie. Very boring and slow. Maybe Spielberg or Mel Gibson will remake this. — Roml_007
Sad, but part of history
The movie was slow at first, but it was such a sad witness of his easily the evil Nazis just didn’t care about life in general....It was great seeing average middle class Americans step up when called upon. — Trump girl
Very disappointed in this one, considering all the hype about being Nolan's best work and the pre-Oscar buzz. It is painfully boring, — Cameron the average critic
Epic film making
Epic film making about a desperate moment in history. For those that complain about lack of chracter development ... this is a visual re telling of Dunkirk ... not your typical Hollywood made up love story / made up human drama conveniently set againts historical events for effect. Bravo Mr. Nolan, Bravo! — andyh753
Not the tradicional history telling, be prepare for something new and unusual. In my opinion one of the best war movies. — Guedesric
Don’t waste your money!
This movie is awful! The writers misrepresent the factual events of Dunkirk. You never even see a German soldier! A complete waste of time and money! — CBesier16
Wasn’t a fan at all
I Love all Christopher Nolan movies however this wasn’t one of them. — ezbz0126
