boring AF
★★★★
I don’t even know what to say. The whole thing could have been summed up in one 30 min made for tv episode. It was so boring. I don’t understand how he says he all about Dunst...but ends up in Fannings room the same night?!?!? There is NO explanation. I know some movies are open ended so you can make up your own....but this aint that. — vertigoxcured

This film was amazing! Gorgeous cinematography, wonderful acting, and the setting was outstanding. The one’s who couldn’t sit through it most like aren’t that educated on film, because this film is without a doubt good. — Matthew Kyle Smith

Worthwhile
★★★★
I decided to give this film a chance on a long flight. I was a clean slate in the sense that I had not seen the 1971 version and I had not read the book. I was interested mostly because I had watched Kidman in Big Little Lies and was impressed with where she's at these days. The movie suffers from lack of development. I would have enjoyed a few more scenes demonstrating how the women are taken in by Farrell's character (e.g., the "I love you"s fly far too fast and unbelievaly). At the same time, I'm a fan of old Hollywood and I had the sense that some of the film was an homage to that era/ Gone With the Wind, so it may have been strategic. The premise is completely captivating and the acting superb. It's like a really good first draft of something that could have been epic. It's unfortunately that it was marketed as the "crazy women torture helpless male"... such a hack concept. The movie runs deeper than that, but you'll be disappointed if you turn it on hoping for a snuff film. If you like period films and/or like films that scratch the surface of the socially constructed psychology, you will enjoy this. I was also pleased that it inverted a lot of gender expectation: Farrell is the sex object, Dunst is not made up and perfected to within an inch of her life, Kidman plays her mix of control and desperation perfectly and Fanning adds depth to her antagonist role that really make the most of an otherwise sparse script. — zafulotus

Great Cast - But Opportunities Lost
★★★★★
This movie could have been so much more "juicy" if the dirctor (feminist Coppola) did not try to make it so PC. As it is it is mostly "implied" situtations and eye candy. So many love triangle opportunities lost... See the original with Clint Eastwood. It is a better movie and more engaging. — SeattleMoose

Too dark. Too slow. Too boring. The original with Clint Eastwood in the lead role was better. — E=mkitty2

This is absolutely HORRIBLE movie . For the life of me I don't understand how anyone could actually give this movie a good , or even fair review . Ohhhhhhh , Now I get it . Because of the Directors famous last name .....Coppola . Well, Let me be completely honest here..........Go watch paint dry !!! You'll have a better time , and might even learn something. Which is more than I can say about this move . Any " Good " review on this movie is a blatant lie to the moviegoers — MrItunesIsHere

Irritated enough...
★★★★★
...by the last third of this that I couldn't even qualify an 'it's OK' rating. While there are so many components to this that are spot on: the cast, the lighting, the photography and sound, there is a huge hole running straight through the middle of this production. Not having seen the original I am surpirsed at how undeveloped the relationships are here. I was never emotionally engaged in any of them... least of all the Corporal. The story happened hastily and suffers for it. Could have been so much more gripping. — matycee

Kirsten Dunst Shines
★★★★★
“We can show 'em some really Southern hospitality.” - This gothic Civil War tale by Director Sophia Coppola is a dark n’ stormy masterpiece. Kirsten Dunst shines in this film, only confirming what an amazing and reliable actress she is. She’s become Sophia’s Muse and always delivers such beautiful and ethereal performances (the Virgin Suicides & Marie Antoinette) Dunst vulnerablly oppressed portrayal of Edwina is the best performances from a Female Actress this year. My Favorite film of 2017! — KSully54

Meh
★★★★★
The best part is the scenery and the dress - to get a feel for what it must have been like for a group of women living alone during the Civil War. The movie is 99% in the dark so I found it visually hard to watch. It's very slow moving which is fine if there is a payoff, which there isn't much. Not much dialogue or character development. And it just...ends. Mostly atmospheric scenery. — Amy134679

The only good movie of Sofia is Lost in Translation
★★★★
Hey Sofia if you really want to do this kind of films, Please learn from the master Park Chan-wook. the movie is slow as Sofia's style, boring if I may say, and with a lack of propose or direction. Is once in a life time of 5 bored girls and horny soldier that got chopped otherwise come back to lost in translation style or somewhere. I want my $15 dollars back. — LaCroix D'Chavel

Not worth the money it took to make it........
★★★★
Boring from beginning to end. I kept waiting for it to get good and for something interesting to happen. The characters have no development and you are left wondering about their motivations. I want the hour and a half back it took me to watch this. — Not happy camper45

There's so much going on here
★★★★★
I think this movie may catch viewers off guard thinking it might be an arthouse costume drama. But, it's Sophia Coppola, so there's a lot more to it than that. What Cpl. Burney, John to some, is to these women and girls and how he tailors who he is to appeal to each in the way she wants to be appealed to is kind of fascinating. How each girl/woman is more than her reaction to him is what may be overlooked. How they are together should catch the viewers' attention. This is a "quiet" movie, so to enjoy it best, listen closely. And, less metaphorically, I thought the sound production was a cut above, too. Each scene is a splendor, but visuals always get the most credit ;). — volantiad

Huge disappointment
★★★★★
I equate this movie to a piece of cheese that has gone bad. You look at it and it looks OK but the closer you get it has a stench to it. After seeing the trailers, and being a fan of Sofia Coppola‘s other films, especially The Virgin Suicides, I was expecting much more from this film. It’s not necessarily bad, it’s just boring and gauzy and dreamy looking and an hour and a half of nothingness. I’m writing this right after I watch it, because I will never think about this movie again. It wasn’t completely awful, but it also wasn’t engaging and memorable. — MichelleGoBlue

Watched this at a friends. So boring and very under development of the characters. I'm amazed at the number of stars this movie received. I'd not waste my time with this until it's a 99 cent rental 👎🙈 — Gamer holdem

Fooled by the Trailer
★★★★
The movie is a complete sham. In the trailers, every scene that was shown was twisted to make the movie seem what it is not. To begin with, it’s not a thriller nor a suspense. Almost every scene is predictable in nature. The direction of the film is as common as drinking water when you’re thirsty. The acting, tho phenomenal, is based out of a boring script of directionless dialogue between the characters. This movie had the potential to be a great film, but wasted it. Very disappointed that the director would allow the trailers to be so misleading. Absolute garbage and a complete waste of time. — PaperBoy0099

Horrible boring movie.

Not what was advertised
★★★★
I made it through, but only because I napped part of the way. Fortunately, it was super easy to catch up when I awoke. It was yet another scene with someone searching the tree line through a looking glass followed by a lot of talking. I really wanted to like it, because I like all the actors. It all seemed so flimsy in the character development department. Maybe I'm just too shallow to understand it. :-) — TheJWag

I can't suffer another minute of it
★★★★
Bought this as I love the actresses/Director. Quit watching after about 40 minutes as it's about nothing. Very slow moving, no emotion, no story, just women pining after a man with so great of restraint as to render the pining invisible. Lots and lots of talking in an uptight, puritan manner. Even too grey to watch visually. It felt like 100 minutes of silent wound cleaning in the opening scene. Excruciatingly boring. — movie-lover1

Unfortunate

Stellar acting and good cinematography. But the story dragged on way too long and kept my interest for about 15 minutes. — wblakewright

An obvious lack of story made it slow and boring.
★★★★
When 99% of the promotional material and clips are about WHO made it and WHO directed it then you know how it got made, not because of a rich story that was turned into a film. The purpose of this movie was simply a networking art project so people could say they worked with so-and-so, and you end up noticing this and wishing for more story the whole way through the movie. — 700 Pages

A great movie from a great director
★★★★★
Another spectacular film from Sofia Coppola. The cast is amazing and Nicole Kidman magnificent. — MoonRiver in New York

Not beguiling in the least
★★★★
So boring. No depth to any of the characters. I'm not sure if this is a faithful adaptation of the book, but if it is, the book certainly didn't deserve two movie versions, and not with such (usually) engaging performers. I spent more time watching the seconds tick by than in any other movie I've seen this year (and I see one or more a week). — Holtzmannrules

This is a really good move that I didn't have to see. I was excited because of the trailer, but disapointed by marketing. I understand they had to sell it a certain way, but just so you know the movie isn't what you think. I like it, it's solid, it's just nothing special. I love Sofia Coppola, and it's good to see her making good movies, but thsi is an easy pass. It's good, but you don't have to see it. — gmanggmoney
