just plain weird and not that funny...
★★★★
I should have just left it at the trailer. The trailer made it seem funny. It was not. Too many unexplained plots. Too much abuse from Jason Sudekis character and too much taking it from Anne Hathaway’s charater to really be a comedy. Too much even for a "Dark Comedy". The idea seemed really good though. — talcazar

LOVE LOVE LOVE both main acotrs, however i have tried to watch this snooze fest of movie three times and have quit ever single time. why it is still on itunes top ten is beyond me. i really thought jason sudeikis would bring more. — charlotteva95

Just awful
★★★★
Such good actors, with considerable screen chemistry, enjoyable setting and cinematography (except the cgi). All cruelly chained to the most intolerable story you’ll ever sit through. Watched it all the way through only for the the positives, knowing I’d hate it in the end. — Needs to work on the road

Monster Drama
★★★★
A very intersting, and unusual, plot that works well. Anne Hathaway's charachter is boring but I liked how the Jason Sudekis charachter ended up being unpredictable. Worth the rent. — Frank C 66554321.

Comedy mislabel but still excellent!
★★★★★
Somehow this was labeled as a comedy and yes there are some comedic undertones but it's a sci-fi drama with a sprinkle of romance to be more precise. The story was excellent although it leaving several unanswered questions. I think Jason Sudakis was a miscast for this. I hate to typecast but he seems too nice of a guy to play an abusive bully. While he did an excellent job in the role I felt like I was watching Santa hit Mrs. Claus and it didn't sit well. I guess it means he did a good job if it made me dislike him a little. Anne Hathaway as usual delivered a great performance but she's falling into the niche of the frustrated/awkward romantic who can't seem to figure out what she wants. Overall I recommend this movie to those like a good story with open expectations. The monster doesn't get a lot of screen time but the stories really not about that anyways. — cascade421269

I would have rather done homework
★★★★★
This isn't a comedy, and if both the main characters in this movie didn't have serious unexplained psychological problems then it was incredibly minor (or again unexplained) problems that turned them into pathetic people. It's a shame because I liked the cast, just not the characters they portrayed. — jarrrin

Why does everyone like this?
★★★★
80% on rotten tomatoes? This movie is 80% rotten, 20% rotting. It is a joke that takes itself too seriously and spends most of the movie trying to explain how the joke could have happened when they should have just released a 2 minute joke video on YouTube instead. All of the contrived drama around the joke of someone controlling a giant monster is lost in the depressing story they wove around it. By the time you get to the joke scenes you are too depressed by the story to laugh at it. — ihelo

If your inner emotions became materialized
★★★★★
Was a movie about pent up hurt feels and how they destroy us and facing those "demons" when we figure them out set us free! Two stars just because I didn't enjoy it all that much was more curiosity that I watch it. The actors played there parts great! — Ask&Seek123

Waste of 108 minutes
★★★★
Rented based on my expectations that Anne Hathaway would not take on cra@p roles. Unfortunately she did. It is like watching paint dry for the first hour and does not improve much after that. There is so much better out there. The person who categorized this as a comedy was on somthing not available to me. — eZineJunkie

Seriously Awful
★★★★
This is a terrible movie. Every character is a depressed drunk or manic. No one is believable. The story is based on a ridiculous premise. It's not funny, it's just very sad. The two main characters fight - physically fight, the drunk domestic violence kind of fighting. This movie depressed me also because the actors are so much better than this stupid, meandering movie that is not funny in the least. — Citizen Sane

Very nicely done!
★★★★★
So, here is the biggest deal about this movie. It should not be listed as a comedy in any way shape or form. It's much more a drama and at best, a lighthearted drama. Jason Sudekis was amazing! Anne was great as well, but Jason's part is surprising & suprisingly good. You do have to give the movie a good 30 minutes...but when you get that far it starts to settle in. I highly recommend this movie as it is truly a fresh idea and it was done very well. Just remember that THIS IS NOT A COMEDY...and you'll be better off. — phredi

Painful, funny for five minutes.
★★★★
I watched the preview and thought “oh this looks funny!” Nope. it was a waste of my time. Glad it was only a 99 cent rental... — DefiantNX85

Well that was just stupid
★★★★
I’m a very open-minded person and if bored enough, will watch just about anything as long as it’s decently clean and not vulgar. This however was just stupid. This could’ve been written slightly different in certain areas to make it far more appealing, believable, suspenseful and exciting! It didn’t seem to be cast very well either, except for the “drugie”! I thought it was just stupid. — Dsgeisler

loved it
★★★★★
why do all the movies i like get such bad reviews by the general public. rotten tomatoes got it right. just a great film — Volcogo

Joyless
★★★★★
This movie was absolutely joyless. The only interesting parts are in the trailer. The ending is depressing, and unless you want to watch 2 alcoholics hit rock bottom (and take it out on an unsuspecting South Korea), you can skip the last hour or so of the movie. — SeaLawyer85

Dumbest ever?
★★★★
This was quite possibly the dumbest movie ever. I wish I could have my $0.99 back. — Perlguy67

Great concept, poor execution.
★★★★★
I’m a big fan of the director’s Time Crimes - a fun, fast-paced and crazy time travel thriller. Colossal has an interesting concept and a great cast, but falls flat on execution. The trailer lured you in with a funny/zany premise but, in reality, this is a boring film with superficial characters doing not much at all. Colassal isn’t about a monster destroying Seoul or the American woman who is somehow psychically linked to it. Instead its about alcoholics in a small town who - like the movie - think they’re much more interesting than they really are. These drunks hang out all night together, drinking. Are they supposed to be sympathetic? Pathetic? No way of knowing as their characters are poorly developed, with little explanation given for their behavior and almost no insight into the motives behind their poorly made choices. — Dilleniac

Not what I thought it would be
★★★★
This movie was advertised as a comedic sci-fi, but it was far from comedy and definitely weird sci-fi. It was one of the dumbest premises I have ever seen, and Hollywood is definitely excruciatingly super weird. Spoiler Alert...Girl goes back home to get herself straight and meets an old neighborhood friend that turns out to be her stalker. She remembers what happened in one childhood incident that triggered her head scratching, thus the monster, though she is not one because it was just a figure in her made up show and tell set that was supposedly ...oooh...Seoul, Korea. And the so called friend’s character is the robot. She watches in her youth the friend smash her mockup and then she suddenly gets struck by lightning, head scratching. The friend shows his cruelty as a child but she does not remember and during the movie you get flashbacks as she finally remembers. It was Hollywood waxing psycho poetic about a stalker and a girl getting herself together and releasing herself from her stalker. I would NOT buy the movie to keep in my collection. And I definitely would not pay 99cents again to rewatch. This is Hollywood entertaining the masses. Jokes on us! Nonsequitur, the trailer vs the movie. The operative phrase would be Weird Hollywood Babble Scramble and you can quote me, please. Shaking my head, not scratching it! — smackmymac

Sad movie.

Why is it even tagged as Comdey? It is one of the saddest movie of the year so far, The end was about killing a friend. — Sam Dario

★★★★★
this movie didn't make the normal theatrical movie rounds. Hard to watch even though it has a sound cast. Jason and Anne work with the script they are given. Unfortunately, it isn't much. Don't spend more than .99 cents on this flick. — Rwstover2009

Starts interesting, nice plot but then everything goes down the drain and the end is just weird. I get the base idea of this movie but it is neither drama nor comedy, just something you never want to watch again after you actually made it through the whole movie. — 991tts

Not what you expect
★★★★★
I just finished watching this movie and it's pretty darn good. Now to address some criticisms, the marketing for this movie was awful, but if it had represented the movie correctly. It would have given away to many elements of the movie that are better if you don't know them in advance. The performances are really good from the main cast, Jason sudeikis does steal a large portion of the film and shows he is a really great actor. Abrief description of what the movie actually is: This movie is a character study of Hathaway's character and her problems with alcohol and reliance on other people. This is very much a film about independence. Now the movie itself isn't hilarious, but you have a smile and a nice chuckle every now and then. This is closer to a drama though, and addresses some very uncomfortable themes. It's not a movie that you watch to make you laugh, you watch to see these characters grow into something different. This movie really defies what you would expect and really gives an entertaining, smart, original movie. That definitely is not for everyone, especially with the crappy marketing. But if you want to see something original and compelling. This is a movie worth watching. PS. I am not a paid critic, I wish I could be. But I'm not, also this movie you should not buy at first. I suggest renting it first, this might not be one of those movies you will want to watch again and you might feel cheated. It's best to rent and go in with an open mind. — Critic 13

Just so sad

Okay, I expected a romance or comedy, but this is a drama! The story could have been so much better and the acting too. My recommendation, only buy it when you want to watch a sad movie. — AsMarcellile

Coulda Shoulda Doesn't
★★★★★
It starts with an ingenious and funny concept, and could have been an incisive satire about how the self-absorbed denizens of Selfie World impose themselves on everyone else. But the storytelling is so messy, the tone so inconsistent and sloppy, that it fails to make any clear points at all. The characters are very hard to take or believe in, the mood veers erratically from fantasy to wacky comedy to overwrought soap opera, and a good cast struggles gamely but futilely for some sort of clarity. A decent idea poorly executed. — nocrickets

Colossally Mediocre
★★★★★
Great concept and had a lot of potential, but wasn't nearly entertaining as it could've been. — AlexScott34

Collosal Failure
★★★★
So so bad on so many levels. The intention of this script is to appear original or unique however it's just plain nonsensical. Hathaway is her usual annoying self and while Sudekis shows some decent acting skills, his charatcer lacks any subtsance so he comes across half as annoying. Definitely the worst movie I've seen in a year. — T&A Watcin While Tate'sSleepin

It's a dark comedy. It shows how things can go for a person when something bad happens to them when they were a kid but you can over come them. — 88Quin88

When Two Alcoholics on a Self Destructive Path Meet
★★★★
I watched the trailer and thought this was a comedy. Even the Rotten Tomatoes ratings where great. I could not have been more wrong, this is a film about two alcoholics with real sociopathic issues. The whole thing left me with bad taste. I can’t understand how Hathaway agreed to do this. Also it completely destroys the good image I had of Jason Sudeikis. If you haven’t watch it, don’t. Not worth it. — Ryuku San

A surprising refreshment 😍
★★★★★
If you like dark comedy, great acting and a very unique plot, this is a must watch. I can't say enough of how much I enjoyed this film from start to finish. The trailer didn't explain much; which is good, because there is a whole lot more to it without spoiling it. Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis both gave a wonder performance in their role of dealing with real life relationship problems and then the monster part came into play which gave the plot an interesting and suspenseful twist. This movie in my opinion is one of the best movies in 2017! — Neo_Review

Slow and borring
★★★★
I really wanted to like this movie. The trailer made it look so good, but it was misleading. It's really a comedy that gets super dark for no reason at all. The actors, script, and director all seem to be working against each other the whole way through. It was clunky, slow, repetitive and boring and a hard to watch. The lead character was really hard to like, and you really have to like her for the movie to work. Mostly, she takes her male friends for granted, uses them, kills one, and in the end, you are meant to think she's the hero. I didn't buy it, and I wish I hadn't rented and wasted my time watching this movie. — Max Max

More than meets the eye.
★★★★★
I was not expecting this film to be as well written, and a huge commentary on the dangers of toxic masculinity & alcoholism all disgusting in a monster movie! Bravo! — ZakKinsella

Not a Comedy
★★★★
Well marketing you've won. I watched the flick, twas an awful movie. Very much not a comedy. I truly wanted to love this movie - the premise started off fun... Then just makes a turn for the dark. What's worse is there wasn't any paritcular reason to do so. They introduce so many possible character arcs, but then don't actually finish them. Nothing essentially is resolved... This movie had potential.. but sadly poorly executed. — blockmonkey

Sad
★★★★
What is sad is the fact that Anne H. Dragged down the movie and Sudekis, not with her acting but because she fell down from the public's grace after showing her true colors on real life situations where she still believes she's a princess. — Arukyan

Cover Art

I haven't actually gotten past the awful Anne Hathaway cover art, let alone, what sounds like the worse movie ever made. — Bastonque

How in the world does this have as many good ratings as it does? Absolutely nothing appealing about any of the characters, but especially Jason Sudeikis' character who is violent, angry, sexist and totally unredeemable. — Jules Praxton
