Viewer reviewsEntertaining but nothing fresh
As a fan service vehicle, AC delivers a decent ride. The effects are great and the acting isn’t bad. David stands out (kudos to the flute scene) but he’s not nuanced enough. He doesn’t need to quote Milton. His actions already say those things. The script gets wonky. The scientists don’t act like scientists. Too much material gets shoehorned into a jarring plot. One wonders why Scott sucked all of the mystery out of the Alien. Alien 3 is better. Not even close to the first two. — Omnithomas
Back on track!
Let’s face it, nothing is as good as we remember it to be. So all the reviews saying that it’s not as good as the original simply aren’t true. Watch the original Alien today and you’ll agree. A vintage classic yes - but by that era’s definition. That said, I think this movie did a great job of taking over the failure known as Prometheus. The plot was good, the action was good, it had a good cast of actors. So the mystery plot, special effects and great acting kept you engaged throughout the movie. At minimum it removed the nightmares that plagued me after seeing how bad the last one was. Now I’m excited about it again, and want to see my favorite synthetic destroy humanity in the next one! — Jeff in Atlanta, GA
Caught in between
I give it 5 stars, because of the extras. Before I watched the extras, I thought Scott was a great director, but after viewing the extras I realized he is pure genius. He now ranks up there with Kubrick in my opinon. The work and attention to detail are second to none. His unique style of drawing storyboards as the filming is done is a talent nobody else has. His writing backgrounds for all the charaters, simply because the actors requested it, is an extrordinary magnanimous gesture on his part to bend over backwards for his crew. While there is plenty of action, it was the background story of creation and the evolution of David that piqued my interest. So you have a film caught in between the action lovers and the hard sci/fi lovers. The extras never should have been edited from the movie, except for Davids drawings, which are considerable. They give you twice as many thoughts to ponder. — greymage
Sorry, I so wanted to love this movie. It had a slow start and too little action. I fell asleep on this movie four times before I could actually finish it. I've seen all the previous Alien movies and while some are definitely better then others, they all beat this one by miles. Didn't get good until the end. — morticia36
Its still the best
I dont care if the ending was bad its the best you did awsome ridly dont let anyone tell you other wise — MLG AWSOMENESS
*Spoilers I had high hopes for this latest entry of the Alien franchise, but they were not realized as this film is quite a disappointment. The "which twin actually survived" ending is something that I would've expected in an afternoon soap opera, not a big budget imaginative Alien prequel. Sadly, the interesting characters (especially Walter) are done away with before we get to see what makes them tick. We also get more questions (on top of the unanswered Prometheus questions) and very few answers. This could've/should've been so much better. A little upset I bought this movie now. Shame... — TheMaverick37
Save your money. Save your time.
I read some mixed reviews about this movie, but decided to give it a shot as I enjoy this genre very much... often enough to overlook some bad acting or other inconsistencies. But this was a complete disappointment in every regard. One plot twist along the way provided some brief entertainment value, but it didn’t make up for the bad acting and unbelievably unrealistic plot/events. — italy2texas
the most borng and ridiculous movie of alll time. Ed Wood films are far better. — belastar
Wonderful movie ! Not about the bad ugly aliens !
A wonderful movie very beautifully directed, scripted and produced. It takes us away from the mainstream perception of that horror and ghastly visuals of an ugly alien to something that’s even more dangerous and scary than what meets the eye!! People with an open mind and deep sense of understanding will love and appreciate both the visuals and the fresh perspective of this movie which is a hybrid of thriller, Horror science fiction and pure art. — Sunny270
It isn't about the story it's about action!
Awful! I felt as if the movie did not pick up where it left off at Prometheus, it didn't explain many of its mysteries. If you like action this is the movie, but if your intent in watching was to get answers regarding the end of promeheus you won't be getting them in this movie as it is a complete different story. — Freddie Tarkovsky
What is this? Prometheus gave us hope for better one. This sequel/prequel is so mediocre, the whole thing doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Plot is horribly wrong, you know- actually android created the aliens--so wrong, so wrong...Screenwriters better leave this alone. Aliens done and gone... — £exxe£
Stunned at the Mediocrity
I am stunned at the mediocrity of this movie both as an installment in the Alien franchise and as a stand-alone horror flick. While the Alien series has delivered varrying degrees of success--with the first two becoming classics and the rest generally having some moments of quality and some moments of remote throwing--I can't find much redeeming about Covenant. All the other Alien films had one common thread--a very strong female lead that the audience rooted for. Maybe that shaped the film for me; I went in expecting to meet a group fo space travellers, learn what makes them tick, their hopes and dreams, etc. but the humans were all paper thin. The Fassbender synthetics were the most lifelike, believable characters. The humans... meh. As some others mentioned, I'd be interested to see a director's cut. Maybe there was character development left on the cutting room floor. Very boring and poorly writtten. Stunned. — Fishes66
Ridley Scott, really, sir? You can do far better than this. You’re too good of a director to produce this mess. It’s one of those movies that I couldn’t wait until it ended. Predictable, too. There are some cool effects as the alien looks frighteningly real especially as it develops into the full blown alien we’ve come know in the series. Still, Prometheus its not. And did not add to the Alien story line. — johnfrancisx
Somebody please kill this franchise. Please. Prometheus gave us a hint of hope, and Covenant dashed it to pieces. The only other franchise more poorly managed is the Fantastic Four. Not even Ridley Scott can save his own creation at this point. It's not horror. It's not thriller. It's not action. And it's not art, for sure. It's painful. "Look on my works, ye Mightly, and despair." I do. Trust me. I do. — Existential.Pirate
Movie franchise “Mold-Breaker”
Usually, when a movie franchise reaches fifth or sixth from the original they get pretty ridiculous...i.e. Rambo or Rocky or Halloween. In many, many instances the original “first” films tend to be great but the studio attempts to squeeze every drop for as long as they can. We have witnessed no less than four Alien titles as well as two more Alien-related stories in the Predator series and most recently we were subjected to Prometheus. But along comes this gem, it was IMHO two hours well spent. This film is set approx 10 years after Prometheus. SPOILER ALERT: the “sibling” characters portrayed by Michael Fassbender as David & Walter are the most thought-provoking aspect. Especially, in light of our current technological forays into artificial intelligence, robotics and space exploration. In other words, the visual depictions within ALIEN: Covenant might actually happen in the foreseeable future. I really liked this film! — jhechotek
Best alien yet — Charles Patrick Henry
Great Literary References!
Whoever wrote the screenplay really payed attention in english class! I thought the incorporation of 'Ozymandius' fit perfectly in that scene! — RiptideRunner
Not only is this a terrible movie in it's own right, it seems to go out of it's way to undermine and weaken the themes and questions in both Prometheus and the greater Alien franchise. It answers questions nobody asked (and the answers are spectacularly riduculous) while failing to explore it's own themes or those introduced in Prometheus. Covenent is, far and away, the worst entry in this franchise to date. Worse than Alien: Resurrection, worse than Alien v Predator, and worse than Alien 3. Not only is not a good movie, it soils the entire franchise. — Veraxus
stupid in almost every way. And a diservice to the original! — bloody gud
Im at a loss to see why this movie was a thing. There was something about it that bored the hell out of me. I'll give it a second try sometime. — doubleg
scary — sety4love
Good movie but paced
It is a good movie and with a lead bad guy who is not an alien. It is a bit long. It has an ending that is different than the others in this franchise and, while I will no doubt see the third movie in the prequel trilogy when it comes out, but I admit that I would like to eventually see an Alien VII that takes place at the end of the timeline and finally provides closure. — Furutan1
Not very interesting
Same old, same old. — Spunkybart
Please try again
This was a lazy movie and self evident right from the start. Looks good in a hopelessly dark way but goes in no direction that doesn't seem pre ordained. My big complaint though isn't the art, which is what it has always been, just more tiresome, it's the science. The hardware looks good and the tech looks good and plausible but what group of idiots would set foot on a totally alien landscape without even the tiniest bio hazard precautions. It was like yelling at the screen in an old time movie house and begging the actor not to go into that room or don't open that box but on a monumental level. — Dnick724
Not a great standalone movie
Don't watch this with an expectation that is will be a great self contained movie. It won't be. It is however an excellent addition to the Alien saga and explains a lot in conjunction with Promethius. You'll have to go back to watch Promethius again after watching this movie. — Alex64225689942158994
Better than Prometheus
Still a little disappointing but liked it better than the previous movie. — BruceUSA
I only have one good thing to say about this movie. Good CJI. Now that i have said that. There is no story plot, you dont even know half the people are married until they die. Worst remake i have ever seen. They didnt even get the alien right, they trie to give it a back story! I mean seriously, if you are going to make a remake at least stick to the original and ICONIC creatures origins. They completely destroyed the alien, moving from a creature that takes control of people for the sake of bringing them to the queen so that it can reproduce. To changing it to a blood thirsty creature thats one mission is kill anything other then itself. — dark wolf45
Loved it! Bad reviews unfair!
I really don't understand the bad reviews of this film. I grew up watching all the Alien movies and this one did not disappoint! I mean I don't know what people were expecting but this movie delivered on suspense on acting on horror and on continuing the storyline that was established years ago. What surprised me the most was the acting! Truly believable characters that were developed throughout the film and very fun to watch. Go into this knowing you were watching an alien movie and you will really really enjoy this film! — TrstyFriend
This movie fails on so many levels it is hard to fathom
Ridley Scott takes everything that made the original Aliens so great, and promptly forgets all about them. If NASA were to somehow fill up a colony ship with Darwin award recipients, then this is the movie about them. In fact, the characters are so stupid it is pretty much impossible to care about them. There is no suspense, no terror, just jump scares that are so plentiful and ridiculous they start to become comical. A major dissapointment. If you though Prometheus was bad, then you are in for a real treat, because this one is worse. — Keith001
Scifi at it's best!
Probably one of the best of the series. Great film. — amarioh
Worst one yet
I have watched all the Aliens movies and this is by far the worst. Don’t waste your money buying or renting this one. — Victory75092
Lacking production integrity and quality.
Given the contraints the cast suffered with the story line/budget/production, they did a fantastic job which in contrast, will make them standout in the end. They delivered a great performance in support of a mediocre story/production. — S1D2

Polarizing to say the least...
Like Prometheus, Covenant is gorgeously flawed. It's not the same experience in any way... it's much more of a throwback to the original's claustrophobic, squirmy origins. and all the makings of a intergalactic horror masterpiece are there. Gorgeous cinematography, stellar acting, jumps and creeps... all in place. Except two key factors that are present in both (and I hope Ridley Scott is reading this because I have been a die-hard fan of his original since I saw it the year it was released)... the emotional draw to the characters is nearlynon-existent (By far the biggest mistake... what made Alien, Blade Runner and The Martian uncontested classics is that all the charecters were thought-out, well-rounded and had an emotional draw). We didn't know who was going to survive in Alien, but we cared. We may not know who is going to survive in Covenant either... but do we really care? The other is the ridiculously... well, ridiculous scenes that keep the viewer wondering "what made him think we would believe a ship could knock over that huge stone pillar without taking on major damage?" (To me as silly as the "can't run side sideways" scene everyone was so up in arms about from Prometheus. The movie still has high points, and some very high points in fact. It's just a shame a master of his craft can't stop making the same mistake these days. We all want the franchise to return to it's former glory so much. It's just a shame it keeps falling JUST short. — Greazy
Sequel to Promethius
I actually thought this was a reboot, but it was an Sequel to Promethius. They are back on the same planet, and unearth what has happened to the docotor from the first film. I thought the movie was great in so many ways. I'm not sure why it didn't do better at the box office. I'm guessing it was bad advertisment. Even if you didn't like Promethius I think you will enjoy this. The alien looks awesome! — Rick1980
This is even worse than the last one. The behavior of the characters is as bad as the worst low budget horror flicks. One of the characters slips on blood and that is what progresses the story. Totally stupid. Ridley Scott must have gone insane or is too old, just like what happend to George Lucas. — Erik Stone
Dont drink and watch this movie
Had more than couple of beers , wife forced me to watch that movie... im struggling , i dont know what is going on... i dont ubderstand it at all... wife is sober and she has same problem as I do.... is this a continuation of Alien , or Critters from back on 80s , 90s... waste of money... need more action then conversations... wrong choice — vDjLake
My favorite Aliens movie
I love the Aliens series, this one is my all time favorite. — DEADSHOTSBIGGESTFAN
Loved it. — R4n6er
Really 1 star? Get out of here...
This movie is a brilliant addition to the Alien series. Of course some Alien movies in the past have not been that good but this movie makes good on all of them. You wont find better. My compliments to Mr. Scott, produders and the whole team. Well played. Don’t ever compromise on tis series. — Reader8888
Great follow up to Prometheus
Covenant answers some of your questions from Prometheus and leaves you with many more. Top notch sci/fi/horror experience. — Jasper45-70

Fun Alien Movie
This was a fun movie about Alien's. It ties in Prometheus which is an added bonus. I personally liked the characters and would of liked to of gotten to know them better but...so be it. This was kind of fast paced so you have to pay attention. I also liked the different types of Aliens used in the movie (oops spoiler?) — GreeneyedAngel
Surprised by how good it was.
I fell into the negative hype and placed this movie onto the backburner for a while, and I really shouldn't have. I have been a huge fan of the Alien lore since I was a kid in the 80's, and surprisingly, I'd have to say that this is now my favorite Alien film since Aliens. It's not a masterpiece, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just another lesson that you shouldn't always let other's negative reviews skew your own opinion. — Freq7
This movie started out good, buuuuuuut it after a while, became very predictable. I knew the ending after they ran into David, the character they had from Prometheus, I then knew how this movie was going to end. Don't wasn't your movie on this. — I've got the Blues
Refreshingly given a twist, this movie is quenched my thirst for a new alien movie; it delivered big time. I running back to the TV when I had to take a restroom break. I was ringing my hands in awe. I was captivated and after the movie, I sat still and slowly took it all in. Great movie. — YTElliott
I feel bad for the actors and production crew who did as good as a job as possible with this terrible script ... predictable , frustrating to sit through after the first 45 mins ... expected much better from Ridley Scott... — ike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worse than Prometheus
It's time for Ridley Scott to call it a day with this franchise. He made one good Alien film, the original. Prometheus sucked, and he's past his prime as a filmmaker. This film is an embarrassment and should have never been made in the first place. — -Donnation-
The only good thing in this film was the acting by Micael Fassbender! The members of the crew behave like complete morons and the storyline is pathetic. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!! — Mike The MC
When you have a gay robot scene
