King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Action & Adventure • PG-13 • Directed by: Guy Ritchie • 126 minutes

Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to the epic fantasy action adventure “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.” Starring Charlie Hunnam in the title role, the film is an iconoclastic take on the classic Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur’s journey from the streets to the throne. When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.

Missing something ( a lot)
★★★★★
Love Guy Ritchie, but with the exception of one or two scenes the movie felt extremely flat. I’m open to the new tone, but would have been cooler if Jude Law’s character looked human (but with powers) than some demon. Arthur’s journey at some point in the movie felt extremely pointless. The beginning of the film showing Arthur as a young man was pretty drawn out and once again pointless for plot development. A lot of pointless with poor plot development, some cool and emotional scenes (all on Jude Law’s Vortigern side) and some typical Guy Ritchie banter/camera work. — That one Bloke1066

Critics Schmitics! Don't listen to them!
★★★★★
This movie was really good! The critics have lost their sense of imagination and don't allow for room for originality in retellings- since most of what we do now are repeats. If you're hoping this is like the stories of King Arthur, then you may not like this either. However, if you are open to a retelling of King Arthur and have a love of dark fantasies, then this is definitely your movie. — Dreamer12630

Three Stars
★★★★★
It's a film for men in America, that have been trivialized by American culture. It's very inspiring for men, and there aren't many left in America, so this film will get mostly bad ratings. If you are a Man, then the beginning is slow and painful, but if you can accept the feminine, fantasy crap, like most of us can survive to have sex with the hot ones here, then you'll be ok. It isn't a great film in any way, other than special effects, which seems to be the norm nowadays. It's a film for the few, with the special effects to wow the idiots, with a message for the best of us. It's hard to find positive messages in Hollywood nowadays. I hope my review isn't a death sentence for the production crew or cast. — Erik Stone

A critic proof movie that's actually very entertaining and interesting to watch. Never solely go by critic reviews like Rotten Tomatoes. Make sure you always check user reviews and places like IMDB that combine a ton of reviews into a score out of ten. — UnivTennVol06

Disapointing
★★★★★
I gave it a two star for the action. The movie was an Illuminati, Mutlicultural cultural travesty that left out a lot of the best parts of what makes the King Arthur Legend so great. When I state it was Illuminati, what I mean is it is full of Occult and Pagan Symbolism while competely ignoring the Christian basis and values of the legends. Gone are knights and honor and chivalry and good values. The main character is a thief and a liar. A thief and a liar like a lot of weirdo occultists. They use symbolism and magic in a particular way that made leaves no room for doubt about what the movie is. Merlin was even a no show in the movie for whatever reason when he is a big part of the story. I grew up really enjoying Legends of King Arthur, and this movie was a major dispointment that leaves out many of the things that made the Legends so great. — Rams63

Maybe not true to the story BUT GOOD!
★★★★★
Completly entertaining and action packed. I liked the sound track too. — GapToad

Loosely based on the King Arthur legend would have been a more accurate title.
★★★★★
Good acting, nice special effects, but this made me think of 2 rival gangs fighting for power. One to remain in power and the other trying to get vengence for past wrongs. But a story to make you think of the King Arthur legend. The personalities and motivations of the Arthur characters are completely different. I would expect this Arthur to become as tyrannical as the guy he opposes. If Excalibur wasn't in the movie another title would have been more appropriate. — Yochanon the yeti herder

I don't know why the critics trolled this ,live so hard. I actually really liked. All the characters were superb, the acting was great; really enjoyed it. The real King Arthur stories are all a bit weird anyway. They captured some of that perfectly and were able to make a decent story out of it. — jdh9912

Almost a 5
★★★★
First time I watched it, I thought it was 80% excellent, 20% maddening. Like it had the makings of being super good but fell just short. Second time, I actually liked it more. Some of the dialogue is fast paced story telling. The cinematography was cool in some of the scenes. It's worth the watch for sure, even worth the purchase rather than rent. The soundtrack is good to go as well. Get it. If you liked the cartoon and don't take yourself too seriously, you'll probably like this movie. — joshsteph

Not a good way to tell this type of story
★★★★★
I love the creativity of this movie but it's more Ocean's Eleven, Get Shorty, and Snatch....which is as far away as you can get with the chosen genre of King Arthur. Some things work very well...some just jolt you right out of the mindset and make you think of other movies where you saw that style...too much jumping around ruins the moment in almost every scene. It's just not a good style match. King Arthur's story needs to be a TV series on par with Game of Thrones and not this mess; I didn't even finish the movie it's so dull. — Abstractjwl

Have no idea why this movie would get a bad rating. It was entertaining, stylish and packed full of action. I would ignore the critics (the professional ones) on this one and watch it for yourself. I really do not understand how this movie got such terrible reviews from movie critics because it is simply AMAZING. The acting is phenonmenal and I loved the different twist on your typical King Arthur story. Would have loved to see more of these movies made! — megan_townsend

Point taken off for Beckham
★★★★
Movie was great but David Beckham ruined it for me. I was taken out of a great movie and focused on such bad casting. Surely when this movie was finished the producers could see he was wrong for the part and they should have re cast it. A scene that lasted a minute really impacted an otherwise brilliant film. — bellabelblue

Terrific movie!
★★★★★
I can't believe I waited so long to watch this movie. Great action sequences, the plot was interesting and riveting. I'm thinking maybe the critics don't like Guy Ritchies style. Having watched some of his other movies such as Snatch and Smokin' barrels I really enjoy the way he weaves different conversations and events until they culminate. Maybe not for everyone, but I thought he did the King Arthur name good. — HK45 Greg

Entertaining but Lacking Originality in Dialogue
★★★★★
Working within the Industry building prop's n costumes gives me a different perspective on films. To much of the dialogue was a spin off of the TNT series Will. This film doesn't have the sly humor n character quirks that show delivers. I loved the armor but again, historically, Vortigern's family crest is a White Dragon, so the black felt like a cheap attempt to point out the villain. The armor spanned 500AD-1500's so there was a lot of variation. Also, the introduction of Mordred prior to Arthur's birth felt wrong to me. He was Arthur's son and a Druid, causing Arthur's eventual death as Christianity and Goddess worship fought each other throughout the British Isles. The sword play and weapons were awesome. The bladesmith that produced Excalibur created a beautiful blade. The most visually stunning effect was the underwater Lady of the Lake sequence. I would have liked more of those moments in the film. Overall I enjoyed it but I wouldn't buy it. It's not something I would watch over again. — Terpsichorean Kat

Wow! Don't listen to the critics!
★★★★★
Just finished watching the movie with my two teenage sons and had a blast. Seriously upset that I let movie critics influence me into not seeing the movie when it originally released. The movie is awesome with a great soundtrack. — Big40

Weak Story/Constant flashbacks
★★★★
This movie was done in a sense where there is constance flashbacks again and again. Idk what the director was thinking. The story is weak and the movie can be dull through most parts. The constant flashbacks takes away from the focus of the story and the acting is cheesy and hard to watch at times. — Abram23

SaveYourTomatoesForAnotherFilm
★★★★★
A movie built around a truth as old as mankind. If someone doesn't stand up and fight evil, then that is all it takes for an evil king to come to power. Nobility is the central theme and it is entertaining to watch the protagonist's journey towards accepting it within himself. Even if you don't believe in the Arthurian legends, the screen play is well written, acted and directed. The production values are high. The mise en scène is earthy tones with magical effects done right. A gritty superhero version of Arthur that has not been done before. — jamesmiclee
