Split (2017)

Thriller • PG-13 • Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan • 117 minutes

Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan returns with an original thriller that delves into the mysterious recesses of one man’s fractured, gifted mind. Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him - as well as everyone around him - as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

★★★★★
I didn't understand the storyline but the main character was outstanding, his transformation from personality to personality was truly amazing and terrifying to watch. I would rate this movie higher if I understand what the movie was about. I don't understand why the main character kidnapped the girls and the ending made no sense to me. Still a good movie though — Sgt Devil Dog

James McAvoy....is a F-awesome actor.
★★★★★
WOW. Great acting by James McAvoy..had me scared too. I don't think there was a need for young girls/teens in their bra & underwear scenes, that ruined it for me a little. — bgc176

A Wasted Opportunity
★★★★
SPOLER ALERT. Though the high quality acting was consistent, the storytelling diminished into cheap thrills and then, in the final moment, an unsatisfying reference to one of Shyamalan's other movies. So, in lieu of an actual conclusion, we get "beast on the loose" news footage and a hokey B-movie "gotcha"! This alone would have been frustrating but the effective and disturbing portrayals of child abuse demanded something equal to the caliber of the imagery. I do not mean that we - the viewer - need to be left feeling warm and fuzzy. The conclusion can be uplifting, sad, tragic - just something that ties the story and actually concludes and respects the viewer. In place of anything satisfying, we get a glance to a police officer, a look of concern on the officer's face and ambiguity that I gather we’re supposed to accept as “interesting” or “clever and ambiguous”. In many ways, the problem is rooted in the silly idea that the “Beast” spared her because of her abuse. In other words, it wasn’t Casey’s intelligence and fight that allowed her to survive – it was the fact that she lost enough clothes for the “Beast” to see her body (and the marks). There is a feminist argument to make here, but I primarily mean my critique to be centered on bad craft. What made Sixth Sense so powerful was the dedication to character, story, and journey. In this, Shyamalan sets up character and story and then disregards them for makeup and special effects. There is a reason all of his work is compared to “Sixth Sense”. It was good. — J. Ste

One of the best movies i ever seen this year. The way the main actor change his expression all long the caracteres, how he change the voices and all stuff is amazing. So far, i think is the best movie of 2017 in this suspense title. You will love it !! — Yuyu Lima

Menacing terror.
★★★★★
Mr. M. Night Shyamalan hit another home run with Split. It's hard to find a hole with this one either. Overshadowed by an ever present awareness for the reality of mental challenges, viewers become gripped by the what ifs. Then they're kidnapped by them. One of my favorites, to date. — J Craig Lynch

Good but Not what I thought
★★★★★
Ok me and my aunt saw the trailer to this all the way back in October and It looked REALLY GOOD so we could wait to see it. So we rented it. It was slow and confusing just In a lot of ways. It just wasn't scary enough. It reminded me of an action movie. If you thinking about rented or buying it RENT it first. — 4GR1

Whatever you're did here, Night, just stick w/ it! This is vintage M. Night Shyamalan ...The good stuff!!! Well done! — jwave

So Good!
★★★★★
This movie very well written. M. Night is back at it again! That twist was not expected, but if you watched closely for the hints in the poster and the movie itself, then you would know what the twist is. Very suspenseful. JAMES MCAVOY IS AWESOME IN THIS MOVIE! Anya Taylor Joy is really good too! The other actor work, but not as good as the two main focuses. I can’t wait for Glass in 2018. — TheBossMan23

Hated it
★★★★
Good actor bad movie. Enter a movie that is more praise than what it should be. Yes it does take talent to be the person in the movie. But it's a far cry from a good movie. 2016 — Daniel Myers Ogden Utah

Crappy, not 'Creepy'
★★★★
I guess the director was thinking to himself, "I see stupid people." And that's all we ever get with this movie. There is nothing clever, original, interesting, or even remotely intellectual about this thing. It's just the same dull and tedious storyline of people kidnapped and trapped in a room, or rooms, trying to escape. I think this director needs to stop making movies. Or else people need to stop financing him. Because he's not coming out with anything good and I don't know if I'm more frustrated by having wasted my money or my time… but I truly can't afford to put myself through this kind of crap again. — Mr reason

Horrible movie
★★★★
Don't waste your time with this movie. — Joy.cs

So far so good...
★★★★★
I have to say it's good but I think you should watch "unbreakable" starring Bruce Willis first before watching this because it's quite confusing of how it started. There's a lot of clinch in this drama. However, it's have nothing to do with unbreakable but it's somehow relate to the plot. Overall the movie is good, ur not bad at all. I have to give a credit to the guy who act all different characters and he's good at acting and I'm surprise by it. — Fobby9241

Wow!
★★★★
Very good movie! It had me on the edge of my seat! I only give it four stars because I don't quite have the stomach for some of the parts towards the end but all in all, great movie. — fluteplayer246

Decent Movie!

Good movie, good cast. I enjoy the foreshadowing the movie gives and the flashbacks. However, it was relatively slow moving, in my opinion, but otherwise a nice thriller. — TylerWithaC

Split (2017)
★★★★★
M. Night Shyamalan has proven yet again that he is one of the greatest horror directors of our generation. Split is well-directed, with an A+, award-deserving performance by the great James McAvoy, topped off by a trio of phenomenal young actors. Split is one of my favorite movies of 2017 so far. It was terrifying, intense, creative, and original. — theonedirectionboy

Rent not purchase
★★★★★
The story was different and fresh, so that's the plus. However, the acting (for the most part) was subpar! Hollywood continues this trend of portraying folks as having no COMMON sense in desperate situations, and or fight or flight reactions. In other words, get away from the status quo of the helpless victum being taking advantage of. It would have been a better film if that was the case. For example, the movie starts off with the guy abducting multiple girls, in a parking lot, in the middle of the day, with their father present. Come on really??? No one else went shopping that day, or saw what happened??? Where's the creativity? Also, what I just mentioned is in other parts of the movie. — Realblog

Amazing!
★★★★★
James McAvoy did an AMAZING job! It would be INCREDIBLY hard to design and act 9 different characters. Impressive! — ActiveFlipper

Triumphant Return
★★★★★
Finally, M. Night Shyamalan has made his comeback. It seemed for a while that he had lost his edge or his inspiration, but he's got it back now (even if he had to return to a previous film's universe to get it). Just a solid movie all the way through, and, like everyone is saying, terrific performances. If you like M. Night's best work, you'll love this too. As a side-note, I wish everyone would just quit complaining about this movie being "offensive to people with mental disorders." Ridiculous. If you don't have a split personality, stop being offended on someone else's behalf. The idea that this movie is making some sweeping argument or generalization about any group of people or disorder is ludicrous. And by the way, I saw this movie in the theatre with my brother who has paranoid schizophrenia, and he loved it as much as i did. — GoS/T
