The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Thriller • R • Directed by: André Øvredal • 86 minutes

It's just another night at the morgue for a father (Brian Cox) and son (Emile Hirsch) team of coroners, until an unidentified, highly unusual corpse comes in. Discovered buried in the basement of the home of a brutally murdered family, the young Jane Doe—eerily well preserved and with no visible signs of trauma—is shrouded in mystery. As they work into the night to piece together the cause of her death, the two men begin to uncover the disturbing secrets of her life. Soon, a series of terrifying events make it clear: this Jane Doe may not be dead. The latest from Trollhunter director Andre Ovredal is a scarily unpredictable, supernatural shocker that never lets up.

Solid horror flick!
★★★★
This film had a great build up, and a solid finish. I preferred the first half of the film and the way it led up to the second half. From there, it goes in a pretty generic direction but you are already invested by that point so it's not that big of a deal. Overall, definitely recommend this. Great late night movie for Halloween! — Ganwan

surprisingly good

psychological horror at its best. great acting and story development. — Ndfgjiibgds

I rarely write reviews, but I feel so awful for Brian cox for being involved in this train wreck. Wasted time and money. — movieweb

Jane Doe
★★★★★
Very good movie! Had my girlfriend jump early in the movie. I have seen plenty of spooky movies and happen to stumble over the $.99 rental and thought I'd give it a shot. I wouldn't say it's worth a purchase at $9.99, but if/when it hits below 7bucks, definite purchase! — Chenderson62

Very well done!
★★★★★
I am a big fan of the genre, and try to see most everything I can. This is a must see, well paced, scary and gorry, but not far fetched with exorbent special effects. I especially like that the two Tilson's were together throughout the movie, experiencing the situation as a team. Also to note, the streaming was perfect, no buffering, smooth from start to finish. It was my first itunes rental, definitely will utilize this service in the future. — SagesHarley

Amazing!!
★★★★★
Definitely the best horror movie I've ever seen and trust me I've seen a lot. It's everything you can ask for, suspense, jump scares, and even gore! I definitely recommend this movie if you love horror — Flufffffyyyyyyyyyyyq

Sub standard supernatural thriller
★★★★★
This is the correct title for the film. I.e. the one for someone who has seen this genre many times before and needn't bother with this one. It's not scary and offers the most simplistic "why the evil" narrative I've ever seen. It's a shame, because father/son as coroners and a real corpse could have been a tale of intelligent audience engagement if kept to some semblance of reality. — markusslaterus

Shocked
★★★★
From the beginning I was hocked..This movie will have you wondering what's next while being terrified of what's next — JasSkyCam

The story is promising, but fails to deliver.
★★★★★
The story is promising, but fails to deliver. You'll want to know and really explore two things: 1. who is this girl, and 2. what happened to her; unfortunately, once your interest in these things climaxes (fairly early in the movie), the story turns into a lame sequence of horror-movie tropes. It's not so much of a horror-thriller as it is a silly monster movie. Disappointing. — Franklin Stein

Forget It
★★★★
Don't waste your time and money on this poor excuse for entertainment. What begins as a fairly interesting forensic murder mystery quickly degenerates into a predictable, run of the mill schlock horror film that tries--and totally fails-- to be a combination of "Night of the Living Dead" and "The Exorcist". (also includes some camera moves stolen from "The Shining"--if Kubrick were alive he would sue). Then, near the end, for good measure the Salem Witch Trials gets tossed into the gloppy cinematic soup. Forget it. — zurich1900

When writing plot fails make the character narrate
★★★★★
The plot loses its momentum so they just have a character narrate the whole back story out of NO WHERE! It leaves you thinking "Really?!" It's a real w t f moment. Ummm no — Down for the ads

Left wanting more
★★★★
This is a really solid horror film on every level. Tension, pace and acting are superb. Some lose ends are definitely left untied and I think that serves any good movie to keep the audience guessing and thinking. Very smart, creepy thriller. — zmyers19

Great movie !
★★★★★
It's about a woman comes to the morgue there's no sign of any marks on her for doing the exam, that she a Damon , maybe she's the devil, scared me two or three times got me jumping. Great movie watch it at night and get some popcorn ! A really good MOVIE !🎥🎥🎥 — Simdps

It’s good.
★★★★
I enjoyed this. A palpable feeling of dread and foreboding emanates from the mysterious autopsy, especially when the lens hovering close over Olwen Kelly’s beautiful lifeless face feels like it’s too close to something dangerous and the movie watcher feels something fearful afoot, head to toe. The story and dialogue can feel a bit stilted or contrived later in the movie when the obviously supernatural proceedings are somehow not fully apparent or self-evident to the coroners, and the movie takes on some traditional zombie tropes. But overall a pleasing horror watch. Brian Cox, of course, is great, and Emile Hirsch works fine, too. I should add, too, that at one point during the autopsy, when Brian Cox is noisily cracking ribs, my next-door neighbor dropped something loudly to the floor, and I wasn’t just startled by a noise, I was a little scared, and creeped out at the coincidence! — D'chill

Great story, but longer?
★★★★
Great acting as always from Brian Cox. Good story, though predictable at times, but needed another 30-60 minutes and a better special FX budget to seal the deal. — Defile Pope 196

Fun until the last half-hour, which sucked
★★★★★
Spoiler alert. She could have actually been a witch, the only actual witch at Salem. An ancient creature, instead of someone who was transformed into a witch by torture, which is silly. Had that been the storyline, poor Cox wouldn't have had to do that wretched death scene. Also, I wanted to see more of the specter we saw through the ax hole in the door. The one with its mouth in stitches, which is a cliche, of course, but it looked as though it might have been pretty wonderfully horrible to see the entire face. Then there is the clumsy twist of plot when the spectre at the elevator door turns out to be the girlfriend. Pointless. Then there was the silliness of the old man appearing on the landing and scaring his son into falling to his death. I loved the spookiness of the woman's stare, however. — holyworrier

It was scary to watch at times but I'm tired of the critic hype
★★★★★
It was just...average. All the jump scares were expected, the "mystery" of this Jane Doe was exactly what I thought it was when I watched the trailer. I mean...its just not THAT good, but its okay, good acting, setting of atmosphere, and plot but I think if they invested more in the story it would've put a more lasting uneasiness on the viewer, instead of just rediscovering the same conclusion just different ways for a solid 30 min. of the movie. Why did I watch this movie? Yeah, I saw the trailer, and was like, "Yeah, okay." But the critic review is what swayed me to watch it. It just frustrates me when this happens. — Comedy? Horror? Chicken Lamp?

This is a fun, terrigying thriller horror gem that DELIVERS. Great acting by one of the greatest of all time, Brian Cox, and Emile is strong and steady - can't be easy to sustain beleivable terrified and have it incrementally increase with the tension. Great horror! — JADAHL

This is one of those movies that starts to get under your skin; but it gets too crazy at the end and you realize that it is just a movie. I didn't know that the woman was actually an actress because she was true to her role as a very weird autopsy victim. — majorthomas

Unbelievably Terrifying
★★★★★
I couldn't believe how well directed, acted, and written this film was...This one is made of all the things that are TRULY horrifying. In other words, what 95% of the horror films that are made today are sadly missing. I wish I could buy it instead of just rent, but for some weird reason it's not available to purchase. Anyway, see it any way you can, it's remarkable. — Jaokguy

depends on why you want to watch it
★★★★★
if you are in the mood for a bloodfest with all the usual tricks, and overpriced to boot, this is your movie. the cast is excellent --brian cox is always worth watching, and emile hirsch does the best one could with this. thanks goodness for that, since there are basically 2 and 1/3 people (and a corpse) in the movie. their characters are dumber than dumb --from the first clue (dirt under the corpse's nails) it is obvious what is going on, but they plod through the maximal number of "revelations" (and bodyparts) before they twig to it. you'll be screaming at them to figure out the obvious, but in their morgue nobody can hear you scream. this is the script: "what the f...k" repeated a hundred and five times. they never fail to put their faces slowly, slowly, slowy up to the wrong crevices or holes (followed by "what the f...k" or the usual shock glimpse or both). no spoilers though: they did have to choose between the three standard endings of nobody survives, one person survives, or only the red shirts die. — predmon

The Autopsy of Jane Doe
★★★★★
Creepy, cool, intriguing, and keeps you guessing too, as it is a mystery while being somewhat of a throwback to the witch hunts of Salem. NOT AT ALL FOR CHILDREN. Ok for some mature teens, but I think they don't exist anymore in this hemisphere. Anyway, this one is pretty good. Furthermore, I think American horror movies aren't very good, but I'm glad I watched this one, and you will be too. Necrophiliacs just might like this movie more then the rest of us. In closing, this movie is somewhat twisted, keeps one guessing about what they find inside, maybe slightly unsettling, but very watchable. Go make some popcorn, hurry back. — jymjay

This would make a good 20 minute Twilight Zone episode. Things happen that make sense toward the end of the movie, and it feels stretched too thin. How did they get Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox to sign on for this? — Mr. Cruncher

This movie has an amazing amount of suspense that leads up to the end. I am sorry, but anyone that calls it "boring" has an attentions span lower than my daughter- who turned 3 in November. Good Movie
★★★★
A horror movie that isn't trying to replicate the same plot as so many others. Although many of the jump scares are predictable and if you listen to the dialog you can predict many of the events; its still a solid movie. The very ending (last scene before credits) is only thing I thought was bad, but other than that it was good with great performances from the cast! I would never give this 5 stars because I would never watch it again because its not that great. But this is definitely worth one watch. — Firecatforcealpha
