Viewer reviewsugh. Read if youre agnostic/etc.
I love movies like "300," "Gladiator," etc. Figured this would be smilar after watching the trailer. It was (just not as good), my issue is they kept weaving in Jesus-y BS into the movie. Way too much Jesus stuff for my taste. It really wasn't even necessary. Throughout it was Jesus preaching, Jesus calming a crowd (several times), and then at the end, crucifying Jesus. For a minute it felt like I was tricked into watching "Passions of Christ." I am glad I only rented this movie, but I wish I could complain and get my money back. I get it, Christians believe in Jesus, to each their own. But it was a turn off for this agnostic. It was way too preachy when it could have just been about a family/revenge/roman sports/etc. Hopefully this review saves some one else a few bucks if you aren't wanting Jesus shoved down your throat. — makeyerday
Ignore the critics! It was an amazing movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it! — Texarkana-Kevin
Love love love
So excellent. — Cookiebiscuit7
The original was my all time faverit movie ever made. Charleston Heston took acting to a whole nother level. I waited to watch this for too long and just knew it would never hold up to the original. I was wrong, It was not better. But it was just as good! Great acting, good script. In the beggining there was to much talking, but it helped to understand more of the story later. So as it starts off fast it gets better as it goes. Watch and ye will see. ;) — GoodFri555
Great movie! Feed the Rotten Tomatoes to the pigs. — Guitarstudios
Spectacular Scenes but More Important Storyline
Good messages of love. Dialogue actually added the strength to the movie....unlike so many with super special effects supported by little message in movie....which is just fine too, but, not here. — frankieblaze
This movie was awesome!
People need to stop trying to be movie critics and learn to enjoy movies again! I don't understand why people don't like this movie, it was wonderful. Maybe those who don't like it are agnostic. But the movie itself is about good and evil and that speaks to your nature. There is nothing wrong with the movie. — dghamilton
It’s okay to good.
I was expecting not to like this movie, but I give it 3.5 stars. I figured it’d be CGI overload with weak plot and character development. But I figured wrong. In fact, I never had the conscious thought during the movie of overcooked CGI. And the character development was plenty good enough. I most enjoyed what I thought was decent historical storytelling. I don’t know the story; believe Judah Ben-Hur and Messala Severus are fiction. But I enjoyed the actual historicity of the over all Judea and Roman narrative. Had to laugh at the RT pro critics assessments of too much CGI and amateurishness. This movie was better than that; and I’m too often shocked at the actually overladen CGI and weak plotting, etc., that these folks somehow fail to recognize in many other movies they might rave about. — D'chill
Do not buy/rent
Do not buy or rent this movie, not even for 0.99 It is a terrible movie. Acting is painful, bland and what you would expect from a middle school play. This could have been a great movie but pretty much every aspect of it is awful. I normally do not feel compelled to write reviews but this one is a special case. You have been warned. — Not worth 99 cent
Critics were wrong
Great movie, great message — Djh85
After reading most of the reviews I held off till I saw it for $.99 rent. Thank God!!!! Even Morgan was off his game in this one. — mr2eagle
Bought it and have watched it at least 3 times. Great movie!!! — Conservative Democrat
Weak movie that lives off its special effects. — Stefan6671
Morgan freeman Yuck!
What a horrible actor.... — Gooddayeveryone
This movie exceeded my expectations. I was sceptical at first because of all the bad reviews, but it was such a relief when I realized, I am actually loving it! I didn't see a need to watch it while comparing to the 1959 "Ben-Hur" (like many people did and slaughtered this one with bad reviews). I also didn't grow up with the old movie, so I never got attached to it. This movie is not like the old one, but it doesn't need to be. It is different and in a great way. For me personally it was better, more watchable. It is tailored for the contemporary audience. The historical background is well-researched. The set and costumes are excellent. The message is beautiful and timely. I believe more people will love this movie if they just gave it a chance. I am looking forward to watching it again. — PlumeriaHime
This movie is great
This movie is great, fun, exciting, entertaining, action packed, adventure, romantic, and awesome. I love this movie a lot. I love all of the characters in this movie. It is one of my all time favorite movies ever. — KbCheetah
The movie Ben-Hur was really great. Toby Kebbell and Jack Huston are wonderful actors; and easy on the eyes too! The Chariot scene was intense and beautifully shot. Christ's death scene was really moving. Forgiveness is something that we ALL should do always! Great job! — Boojack17
This movie made me cry. It was a wonderful movie, and even though it is different than the first, it still was a great movie. :) — Funnyfish09
It's worthwhile as a rental or a purchase...
This Ben Hur story is not the one in the book, or my absolute favorite movie, the 1959 version. It's similar to the 1959 version, but different. This different version is good too. It's not a grandiose as 1959 version, but still entertaining. I first watched this movie on a trans-Pacific flight that had been heavily edited to delete the scenes w/ Jesus. Anyhow, the full up version injects Jesus tastefully and really adds to this version's ultimate theme of forgiveness. I like the ending, and wonder what Judah Ben Hur goes on to...just like I did with the 1959 movie. A genuine 4 star movie IMHO..MJC — MJC-Vancouver WA
I absolutely love this movie and I would watch it over and over again and never get tired of it. — WishingHurdles
Wow, totally amazing!!
I really wish that this would of played in our theaters longer I didnt have a chance to see it, the chariot scene would of been spectacular there. They did an awesome job on this movie, and I l really enjoyed the fact that it showed who Jesus was. Have not seen the original Ben Hur so cannot compare the two. I have to say though that you really cant compare movies made now and those made way back then because technology has just changed so much they are in a different "ball field" really. I am so glad I bought this it is definetly up there with Passion of The Christ, Exodus, and all the others to watch throughout the year. Hoping more people will watch and enjoy, its also one that I would allow my 11 yr old to watch, compared to what else is out there this is mild. — Cheezhead76
What can I say, the movie wasn't good. This movie tried to accomplish too much in too short of a time..not enough time to develop all the important characters and plot. And as for it being a remake of the original, the attempt was pathetic at best. And why did they cast Morgan Freeman?? — Rambo8649
I See What The Critics Mean
Terrible writing. A mess. Disjointed. Bad editing. Should have been a big set movie but looks like they did some serious corner cutting. Nice locals but that is it. Considerable miscasting. I kept going... "what the hell?" with so many scenes. If they are going to do a remake, DO IT GOOD! Maybe with a bigger budget and more time they could have told a good story. AND BETTER WRITERS! — ScottBruneau
The FIRST time I agree with the R.Tomatoes
This was not meant to be a friendship between 2 brothers story. Sad, because it is even advertised and I quote " Based on Lew Wallace’s timeless novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ." So much for a remake, speaking of the one with C. Heston. AND it is not a crime to compare the 2 movies. Too bad, because it looked like there was enough in the finance dept. to make a grand movie. EPIC?! Yes, if you are Roman an like blood and circus's like Morgan Freeman said. Save your money, wish I had. Oh well...🍏 — 14JANUS14
A sad attempt to remake one of the greatest movies of all time. Perhaps they thought if everyone who watched the original was dead that they could get by with shadow of the original. I am glad that I did not pay to watch it. — Tonjim
Amazing! — iBryanB
Pathetic — W20cove
No sure what movie these critics watched but this movie was everything. I felt every emotion watching this movie. Money well spent and I will watch it over and over. — Kemronpa
For A New Generation
This is definitely different than the original epic. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call this one an epic as it is most definitely a drama. But I rank it higher than Noah, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and Son of God as far as a touching modern made Bible movie. It's incredibly impressive considering that it's pretty much independenly made made. The origianal had (at that time) an enormous budget to work with. Considering the resources and such for this film, I must say that I was impressed. It's deep, it's moving, and it has an epic charriot race for the ages! I must say I wasn't impressed with the ending, but it's still a great film! — Emerson Sterner
I don't no why so many bad reviews....The movie is great! Before listening to the bad reviews, watch it and take your own conclusions. — MariaLQS
Looks really good
Wish Apple would let us rent more movies that "critics" say are bad to let us make up our own minds. But they'd rather only sell it for 15$. Not worth it for any movie. — Nexus pain
👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 — I'm DEAF!!!
disappointing movie with highly unlikely sappy ending.
I can't believe I bought this movie.....Morgan Freeman sounds just like he is reading March of the Penguins. The plots makes no sense at all and the ending is insulting. Worse movie I've seen in years. — Nicorithner
If you see this movie as a standalone, it might be worth your time. If you have the 4-hour-flick with Charlton Heston in memory, forget it. Of course it does not have so many slowdowns as the original movie, but the chariot race and the sea battle are really not done better - despite having much more technology and maybe also a better dramatic approach. The scriptwriter and the director had absolutely no new idea. — Gruselgerd
Major insult to a classic
Ben-Hur is a classic novel and movie. This is an insult of the story. Of course it's beautiful bc of the effects, and the acting in parts is decent, but this film was a money grab with zero attention to the original story where they changed major parts of the plot, themes and characters. I couldn't be more dissatisfied in the studio and producers. — Brave Cane United
Not often do I ever see a good remake but this was really well done. In fact I thought it was a great movie! There was just the right amount of Hollywood in it as in the visual effects were not over done and quality was great! But most of all they didn't change the plot and as most remakes the movie people always think they can make the original story better. But we all know how that turns out. Well this is where this movie went right👍👍 — CONTACT!!!
Best Movie Ever!
I can't understand the negative reviews. This is probably my new favorite movie! Excellent!! — Carmiyajoy
Worst movie I've ever seen. Do not buy it. I didnt even get to the end, just shut everything down. — fmonsalvez1066
There is no CGI in the Chariot Scene
The actors were dragged by real horses at high speeds around the arena while a truck with a camera attached tracks their movements from the side. No has dared to do this much live action since they strapped cameras on dinosaurs in Jurrasic Park. The novel Ben-Hur is the most popular novel in American history. The author, General Lew Wallace was not a religious man. He began writing the novel to debunk the story of Christ by writing about the stories of the 3 Wise Men. The more he studied the more he became in awe of the story of the Gospel. His book from 1880 was sold by the millions when there only millions of Americans and few knew how to read. This is the fourth motion picture (not including a Canadian produce TV movie a decade ago) to tell the Ben-Hur story with the first a low budget disaster made about the time the Cubs won the World Series a decade before WWI. The 1925 silent version was the most expensive film made up well into the Age of Sound. No one can top Charlton Heston and one of the worlds most successful movie productions (11 Academy Awards), but this one is worthy of your time. The power of the story carries the movie (with a lot of help from Morgan Freeman, who appears like a powerful blast of air on some low embers when the film is running out of gas near the end of the second act). My kids loved it. It's great to see a new generation discover this classic story beloved for 135 years. — soundtracker
Well done! A story of forgiveness... entertaining... challenging... worth our families' time! — AaronA47274
The story was more realistic and the ending was better than the original. — ShankFuLlama
I liked it but I liked the one with charlton heston better. — ifyoulikemyopinion788791
Really is a great movie and reminds me of what movies should be. Great!!! — firestorm2121
Chariot scene is amazing
Liked the movie a lot. The script is solid, the acting is well done, and the story itself is a bit closer to the original book. The "payoff" at the end comes up a bit short with regards to the effect that Jesus had on the characters. We never fully understand why Judah Ben Hur kneels at the cross and the gospel message itself is not at the forefront of the finale. Nonetheless, it is a well done movie overall and I would reccomend it. One final note: The chariot scene is truly spectacular- they really knocked it out of the park! — storytellerstudios
This is such a good movie. The negative rewievs are not true. I watched the movie and it's a very very good movie. I almost cried. Just watch it guys please watch it👍👍👍👍👍👍👋👋👋👋👋 — Teofil Ciorba
More like "Ben Hurl"
It's just bad in an over the top way. Bad peformers overacting, a bad script over indulging and a bad directly relying on over the top VFX. It's just boring. — Under Stars I Dream
Food for Thought on the 'Critics'
It's funny how these 'entertainment critics' are so bias on certain aspects of of movies, yet fail to take into account certain things. Like, I don't know, perhaps the fact that the original was of the 'Epic' style of film making? Something that is no longer done. The creators of this film had to deal with that fact and did a rather good job all thing said. Also note that these critics, like the Rolling Stones one, ALWAYS report negatively when it comes to anything outside the norms of mainstream entertainment. — Jungle Jimmy
A Movie for All!
I really enjoyed it. It was well directed and the characters were amazing. I loved the original and enjoyed this one as well. Although the showed Jesus's face in this one and they didn't show enough of Jesus's wonders or miracles in my opinion, but they did put in Jesus's best speeches and really showed Jesus's compassion, and that made up for the lack of God's wonders. — Movie Master96
Walked out after 20 minutes, bad audio recording of the main component, the voices, unintelligible dialogue, mumbling and whispering with bothersome orchestrations to try to make it more dramatic took away from what could have been key scenes, meandering drawn out story fractured, hard to follow, poorly framed and shot. If you don't know the story you could be lost very quickly, but some parts are grand and beautiful, just now well told and tried too hard. Anyone liking this is more than likely doing so because of the story they know and filking in with their beliefs and knowledge, for others its just boring and hard to figure. As a believer, zealot i was very disappointed. I felt like i was watching a high priced made for TV drama something that would have been on the BBC maybe.. I wish i would have gone to any of the other movies, it was just not worth the money. — tactileman
Critics are Idiots, this is a great movie
There are so many good films out there that critics have bashed for no good reason. Ben-Hur is a great film, in some ways better than Charlton Heston's. The message of forgiveness and faith is so much more powerful in this movie. — Aimee Robidoux
