Now on Digital HD. From the directors of Little Miss Sunshine comes an engaging and charming romantic comedy starring Paul Dano and writer-actress Zoe Kazan. Struggling with writer’s block and a lackluster love life, once-famous novelist Calvin (Dano) creates a beautiful fictitious character named Ruby (Kazan), who inspires him. But not only does this bring his work to life – it also brings Ruby to life – literally! Face-to-face with an actual relationship with his once-virtual girlfriend, Calvin must now decide whether to pen this love story or let it write itself. Also starring Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas and Elliott Gould, Ruby Sparks is an inspired coming of age story that proves true love can be magical.

Great date movie!
★★★★★
Though I’m still not sold on Paul Dano, I’m a fan of Zoe Kazan (‘In Your Eyes’, ‘What If’, ‘The Pretty One’) and this did not disappoint. The preview makes this look like a much less complex and engaging movie than it really is, which is one of the reasons we didn’t see it in the theater. (Plus Zoe was unfamiliar to me at that time.) However, this film is charming, funny and even a bit heartbreaking. — workworkwork

No Spark of Humanity
★★★★
There wasn't one likable character in this movie. Nothing they did was heroic, humorous, or redeeming. Modern romance movies that lack any heart or true romance are nothing but Shakespearean tragedy in disguise. Save your time and watch an Indy film like Safety Not Guaranteed. Much more rewarding story telling. — mustangsally

Amazing
★★★★★
When I read the reviews here I feel like people will put this movie in the same category as Eternal Sunshine and the like. While these are good moves, they do not do this justice. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and a perfect romantic comedy. Don't skip this movie. It's, like the title of this review says, amazing. — twosevenzero

Why rent this, when you can BUY IT!!?
★★★★★
I'm very disappointed in the fact that I choose to rent this movie, instead of buying it! Ruby Sparks is a must watch, it's originality miraculously has your wheels of imagination turning the whole time never really knowing where the story was going but don't worry there's no "cheesy love story ending". It's realistic but charming. — brandyceleste

This Is that Kind of Movie They Stopped Making a Long Time Ago...
★★★★★
I have to say that Ruby Sparks for me was greatly anticipated due to its relatable themes of love and the written word. From beginning to end I only found disappointment in the heartaches and tribulations of the characters. The writing in this film is unbelievable, a story of fantasy tainted with the harsh concepts and bitter truths of reality. It shows that love is great, but is not perfect. The witty satire that lightly accompanies makes this film one of the best I have seen in years. Well done, I hope to see Zoe Kazan continue to write for American Cinema for many more years to come; she truly understands the value and importance of a good story. — Fjbceeivcffhucdvhh

Perfection
★★★★★
I cannot fully describe the way that this movie moved me. I know that people in their late twentys would see this movie and have more in common with it than a thirteen year old girl but my prerogative to feel the way I did previous to watching this movie has been utterly abrogated. It was remarkable. — Puppywuv99

If you are someone who lives a life, i highly recommend you to watch this movie.
★★★★★
This is the most incredible movie of all time. First, the idea is simply refreshing and creative. From the trailer, we know how everything started(basically a girl he wrote became real). The remarkable thing of this masterpiece is how the hero acted when he had hard feelings. And we all know there is always consequences after every action, which i believe you will be so grieved when see it. Second, it is a movie which leads us/ audience start a deep thought. I had different strong feelings while watching different scenes; it's hard for a movie to achieve it. Maybe you thought this movie rarely change the settings, but the most valuable thing in this movie is its thoughts. I highly recommend everyone to watch it, whether rent it or buy it. i believe if you are living a life u will at least love it. — I was shocked by the thoughts

Surprisingly Great!
★★★★★
This movie was a pleasant surprise. The writing is smart, funny, intelligent, and all around amazing! At the end of the day, the main character's flaws were uncovered by his own creation that was supposed to be perfect. This is one of the few movies I'd actually buy to own because it is that good. It is a "man's" romantic comedy that also appeals to women, and is definitely a must see! — Chi N.

Ruby Sparks sparkles
★★★★★
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. How it could be given a rotten tomato is beyond me. The ending was a bit expected, but still very acceptable. The acting from all concerned was very good and the main couple being a real couple made it more fun. — Josie5000

Wow a writer with writer block……….Yawn
★★★★
Inane, sad, depressing. The try at the end to redeem the geeky leading man from his own fantasy by having him meet the fantasy girl he vanquished was absolutely pathetic. There is absolutely nothing believable about this movie. — I eat books

★★★★★
This one left me talking to people about the story for a couple of days, while well acted and deftly constructed for a little while I thought it was going to go dark but it stayed just where I was hoping and provided an intelligent insight into the relationships that we all find our way through the minefields of and hopefully come out with our emotional gear in tact. — Inigo Montoya Snr

Quirky and Clever
★★★★
Prior to viewing this film, I had never heard of Ruby Sparks. After being intrigued by the trailer, I decided to take a chance. I'm so glad I did. This is a fantastic film. It's quirky. It's indie. It's a great unconventional love story. The characters are complex and flawed, making this not the typical romantic comedy (though there are some funny parts). I highly recommend Ruby Sparks if you enjoyed films such as Juno or Little Miss Sunshine...not your typical billion dollar blockbuster but an interesting and entertaining experience. — Buttercup82

Tried to like this, COULDN
★★★★
This movie turned out to be the worst and most annoying movie I've seen all year. It had a good concept and a great cast, but the story and screenplay just wasn't likeable. The story could've spit garbage after garbage and would've been never ending. Also, the movie looked like it was based off of "CLICK" with adam sandler. The only difference was that the main character had a typewriter instead of a remote control. If I were you, I'd agree with the Rotten review from the last critic, it's the only critic that truthfully described this movie. — outkastsk8er20

Superlative
★★★★★
I can enjoy a romance, but typically they don't end up in my list of favorite movies. This is a notable exception. The writer playing the title role made it all that much more compelling. Cliche Indie Characters.
★★★★★
I did not like the first two-thirds of this movie, in fact, I had a hard time making myself continue to watch it. The reason is that it is so generic, cliche Indie that it defeats the whole purpose of being "alternative" and "independent". Please. It's an insult to compare it to Little Miss Sunshine, that in my opinion is what alternative should be, the characters and their personalities felt authentic. I feel as though theses characters were bought at Urban Outfitters, just cookie cut outs of everyone else trying to be alternative or Indie. So they were not only annoying but boring. "Wow, they're so cool, she paints and likes Zombie movies, has a vespa, wears alternative clothing". So, that rant aside however, the end was very good. The problems they faced in their relationship felt real, and the questions of control, space, and accepting people for exactly who they are in a relationship...all themes approached very creatively and real. So, I gave it 3 stars. — ZuVieleSchluckauf

One of the best movies of 2012
★★★★★
A strange and delightful take on the be-careful-what-you-wish-for fantasy girl. The character development in this movie is fantastic. If this does not just get a win or nomination for best screenplay from the Academy there is something wrong in this word. Zoe Kazan is brilliant in her storytelling and cast perfectly as the object of affection. Let yourself become immersed and you will have one of the most fantastic movie experiences. I know I did. — Sweet John Muehlbauer

Charming, funny and unexpected
★★★★★
I was afraid my husband may think this was a chick-flick and not want to watch it with me. But I convinced him because he had loved Little Miss Sunshine. He was glad I did. We both really enjoyed this movie. The script was unique, unexpected and you really grow to care about the characters. In a time when special effect movies abound, this little gem was a great find. The actors were all marvelous. The homes they used to shoot in were amazing too. Ms. Kazan is a remarkable talent. I hope to see many more great things from her in hopefully a long career. Banderas, Bening & Gould all had great character roles, that were charming and inspiring. The chemistry between herself and her real life partner, Paul Dano was wonderful to watch. Ms. Kazan really understands character development and dimension. Rent it- or buy it! you will love it. — msredhd

It could have been a contender
★★★★★
This movie could have been so much more. It didn't really pursue the comedy as much as I had hoped. It sought to protray real life with strange fiction. I would have to sit down and watch this with the pause button at the ready to list all of the lost opportunities for great humor. There are some real poinent points in this that do make you think, and that is refreshing for a change. — casperbeta

Great movie with a mediochre ending
★★★★★
I really loved this movie. Alot. Until, typical of so many movies these days, the ending was meh. It wasn't bad, it just didn't seem like the best possible ending for such a great production. The acting was outstanding. The plot was outstanding. Pretty much the whole script was gripping. All this made the mediochre ending seem that much more mediochre. There were some seriously awesome things that could've been done with this wonderful picture, but it fizzled. I stress, ONLY because of the last scene or two. I highly recommend the movie to the point that it would honestly be worth reshooting the end. — tanglangquan

Ruby Sparked Calvin into Himself
★★★★
The movie Ruby Sparks is quite insane and brilliant all at the same time. I imagine it probably wasn't made for the box office and if it was it didn't make it too far. I feel it is likely to complex and too emotionally and theoretically challenging for the mainstream movie audience. In a nutshell, it is about discovering love in the most unlikely of places, fighting to keep and understand love, losing love and discovering oneself in the process. I'm not completely sure how I feel about the movie as a whole or if I would have the courage to watch it again. Well, I guess that's not fair! I would watch it again. In the middle of the movie though I felt like it was speaking to me, almost an impeachment of me. In reality it is an impeachment of letting love die in our own selfishness and fear. How tragic, but cathartic and human! When I look back at the cast, Annette Benning, Elliot Gould, Antonio Banderas, etc...it makes me wonder if this was a major motion picture that I simply never heard of. There is so much going on in the movie that parallels life; obviously not exactly, directly or immediately, but nuances and events, both life and internal are similar. I personally feel it called me out and supported me all at the same time. It demonstrates the importance of relationships and healing from broken relationships and gaining perspective on life and learning about oneself through another person. The movie is about finding the right person, the ONE person who sees you and knows you better than maybe you even know yourself and about not letting your fears stifle your growth and shut you down or the other out. It is also about failed relationships not always being only one person’s fault. In the movie Calvin lost who he was, or maybe he didn't know who he was years ago. His work was finding himself. After all, isn't that the journey, finding oneself? In the end it is clear that it takes the right person! Calvin could not have found himself in anyone else Ruby sparked Calvin into himself. — 2ski

Heartwarming yet terrifying at the same time
★★★★★
This is one of the rare Dark Rom-Com's out there. The vast majority of the movie is touching, romantic, and good natured. Yet a few parts are thought-provoking, melodramatic, and one part in particular is actually quite horrifying. The acting on everyone's part is incredible, Paul Dano is just always stellar along with Antonio Banderas and Steve Coogan. The true standout is Zoe Kazan, who doubled as the lead actress and the film's writer and did an outstanding job at both (plus she's gorgeous!). Definitely a high recommendation for this film! — Music Phanactical

Simply The Most Enjoyable Film You Will Experience This Year
★★★★★
I'm not one for reviewing movies, but having just experienced Ruby Sparks…. Thoughtful, charming, enthralling, laugh out loud hilarious, captivating, heartbreaking, and in the end, a proper feel-good romantic movie. Ultimately a lesson in the importance of setting free rather than trying to change those whom you love and instead then cherishing the memories of those you once loved and who once loved you. The whole ensemble of script, cast, direction and production comes together almost perfectly….And nice to see the very real Steve Coogan playing a Hollywood part worthy of his talents…If you're Stateside and haven't come across him before, rent/buy The Trip - It's very possibly the funniest thing you will watch in a very long time….Then search the net for Paul Calf and Alan Partridge…For they are also Coogan. AN UNCOMMONLY SMART ROMANTIC COMEDY
★★★★
From one view of the trailer, you'd probably expect "Ruby Sparks" to be a bizarre comedy like 1985's "Weird Science". And in some respects, you'd be right. But for the most part, it's a dark and often challenging film that intelligently explores what happens when fiction coincides with reality. Paul Dano stars as Calvin, a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career, but is now struggling with his writing - as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby (Zoe Kazan) who inspires him both mentally and emotionally. But when Calvin finds Ruby, in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely astonished that his words have turned into a real, living person. Eventually, the two embark on a rather odd relationship, in which he can make her do things like speak fluent French just by typing it. But what starts out as a wonderful romance gets more tricky as reality hits home. Not only is the premise remarkably original for a romantic comedy in this day and age, but it plays out in a way that feels genuinely heartfelt. Dano and Kazan share a breezy, effortless chemistry that subtly unravels to the point of sudden collapse. It's nearly impossible not to feel the slightest bit sympathetic toward their characters, especially by the film's end. As for the rest of the cast, they each give standout performances of their own as well. In particular, Elliott Gould is a pleasure to watch on screen as the down-to-earth therapist working for Calvin. With its highly intriguing story, relatable characters, and brilliantly quirky dialogue, "Ruby Sparks" is one of the most enjoyable, endearing, and surprisingly poignant films of the year. It may not be to everyone's liking, but for any fan of indie romance, it's worth a watch. — Broken Headphones

"A World Of His Own"
★★★★
This is a great rendition of the Twilight Zone's "A World of His Own." This movie certainly keeps in tune with this era borrowing ideas from the past. However, for it to be an work with an epigone vibe it is beautifully done. The story is great, the main characters are not easy to like or dislike. More importantly I don't feel like a teenage girl reading a Bonte novel or Jane Austen. It's a great date night flick. Rent and enjoy — qlonerider
